Cheers erupt from the J-Lo fanclub as she squeezes into the final behind Outkast, Eve & Gwen, Missy and Mis-teeq. Sophie E-B on the other hand is wiping her tears on Dude from The Feeling's velvet jacket sleeve.

On to heat #6, which is absolutely banging in my opinion, but who will make it through?

  • You get a maximum of TEN TICKS over the three bits of the poll. The top five will go through to the next stage.

  • If you want to change your vote (or tick too many by mistake), you can edit your votes by clicking on 'Poll #12345' then 'Fill Out Poll'.

  • UK chart placings given in brackets.

  • You have until Friday lunchtime to vote.

  • Rep for your favourites in the comments! Youtube embeds very welcome.

This was when Basement Jaxx were ALL GOOD ALL THE TIME and the video is also fantastic. It isn't as good as Lucky Star but it is stopping me want to kill my boss for offering the work experience a biscuit and not me (yes, I am a performing seal) so it must be doing something right.

Oh come ON

Am I really the first person to tick "Oochie Wally"?

Look, let's all go and tick it now and then I can delete this post and you won't have to have the Lex shouting at you all thread.

(Same goes for Peaches N Cream actually)

"Pop"

I thought then - and I think now - that this single was a confused ugly mess.

Who the man behind the World Trade massacres, step up now
Where the four planes at huh is you insane bitch?
Fly that shit over my hood and get blown to bits!
No disrespect, that's where I rest my head
I understand you gotta rest yours true, nigga my people's dead
America, together we stand, divided we fall
Mr. Bush sit down, I'm in charge of the war!

Montgomery Gentry:

They are probably my favorite band of the decade. What I wrote about this track on my own livejournal: Pride that's fueled by resentment and insecurity and comes off in-your-face obnoxious but exhilaratingly so, and kind of funny at that. After years of admiring country and loving some of its products now and then, this was the song that made me fall in love with the genre, fucked up or not, and not least when it scares and angers me.

Rocket Summer

OK, nobody else is going to tick this but it's a lovely slice of laptop generated dance/electronica. Chipmunk-voice-sample heavy, which is unusual for Marumari.

No video for "Rocket Summer", but there seems to be one for another track off the same album on his website here (http://www.marumari.com/web_video.html) (Quicktime required).

He was quite prolific for a while and then suddenly stopped around 2005. Of all the artists working in the 'laptop instrumental pop' genre, I thought he was the most interesting.

I suppose not everyone has memories of everyone at the school dance taking off their nice shirts and spinning them around their heads like a helicopter.

Anyway, embedding disabled on this one (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-26bRZEedZg), but here's some nice footage of the UNC Tarheels.

AAARGH such a banging heat and I wasn't in all day to point people towards the songs to be ticked!

Lina - Playa No Mo' (http://www.sendspace.com/file/atmiuh)

Did ANY of you on my flist d/l this when I uploaded it last week? Sigh. Here is the mp3 again because it's otherwise entirely disappeared off the internet. Completely insane jazz/r&b/opera collision.

Foxy Brown - Run Dem

More adventures in patois from the Fox. For all of those who were won over by 'Oh Yeah' in the last heat - this is EVEN BETTER.

How many times I gotta let y'all bitches know I'm
one of a kind, can't fuck with mines
See when Fox in the place, bare hotness a gwan
when I bust wine we nuh watch ya face, gwan!
Ya too fraud, sound ridiculous
I'm the only Trini bitch that can kick yard shit, FIYAH
What you know about skin out and bruck out
Like a bad gyal bunny hot style, pop pure style

Usher - Pop Ya Collar

Really thought this would be more popular - easily my favourite Usher track, such an irresistibly bouncing melody, you can't NOT dance to it. I have genuinely used it as ~inspiration~ to deal with haterz. Usher was SO hot back in the day too, now he's just a skeevy middle-aged dude :(

OH HANG ON A MINUTE

Just seen the voting totals and we need to have words.

LIMP BIZKIT?????????@!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Ahead of Petey Pablo, Kelis, Usher, QB Finest, Foxy Brown, J-Lo? Um, what?

Also: Andrew WK is easily one of the 10 worst artists of this decade. REDISTRIBUTE YOUR TICKS or never opine on music again imo.

Now it's safely unlikely to qualify I can raise my hand and say that "Pyramid Song" is the best 00s Radiohead track.

o is for oochie

This is 'oochie wally,' for people who've possibly forgotten what it is? It might be too late now but four ticks is RIDICULOUS so if I can jog a few memories then...

OH WAIT - sorry Kelis, enough of yours have gone thru and this is a classic from the dying days of UK garage.

Almost entirely complete! I think about three or four tracks were missing (including the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, annoyingly because I have never heard it and I love their current album).

Oh gods how will I choose?

Oh dear.

I remember watching the show that created them, which was the kick off in the UK for the current era of talent-shows-that-produce-a-new-pop-act-at-the-end.

I vaguely recall sort of liking this at the time, but it seems very short shelf life now - slow-tempo goo a good half decade out of touch at least.

Liberty X managed to be way better, of course.

Usher - Pop Ya Collar

Don't remember this at all. A bit rub, isn't it? I mean, s'alright, but I was expecting something more immense for an Usher #2. It's no "Yeah", for def.

I'd like to direct everyone's attention to the fantastically catchy Oxide & Neutrino, pls:

(Mind this video version lacks THE BEST BIT OF ALL, for which reason here is also an mp3 of the full-length version. Much recommended!)

Also:

C'mon, people, it's a CLASSIC!

Early Lil' Jon; it may not be Get Low, but it is ROWDY AND AWESOME. (And the video is kind of hilarious! Plus there is an E-40 CAMEO = 10 PLUS BONUS POINTS.)

And on a completely different tip, some Morr Music weenietronica: this is possibly my favourite Lali Puna track ever, it's absolutely gorgeous.

(Also, I'd like to publicly take credit for casting the deciding J-Lo vs. SEB fite vote for the last heat; under other circumstances the Ellis-Bext would have been as solid a tick for me as the J-Lo, but with both tied for 5th I had to make AN CHOICE. Anyway, my actual fave Read My Lips single is up in 2002, so no great harm done!)
