Missy Elliott gets the highest turnout of the decade so far, with a whopping 49 votes to win heat #3. Daft Punk, S Club 7 and Mary J Blige are safely through, but Alicia and DanBed tie for fifth - see below for the run-off.

Today's poll sees double J-Lo remix action, microgoth, mashups, possible incest and the Jackson Five (sort of). It's heat #4, everybody!

  • You get a maximum of TEN TICKS over the three bits of the poll. The top five will go through to the next stage.

  • If you want to change your vote (or tick too many by mistake), you can edit your votes by clicking on 'Poll #12345' then 'Fill Out Poll'.

  • UK chart placings given in brackets.

  • You have until Friday lunchtime to vote.

  • Rep for your favourites in the comments! Youtube embeds very welcome.

ARGH what a horrible tie-breaker choice. It breaks my heart to damn Alicia's finest moment, especially given some of the sh1t that's got through but Bedingfield had to be chosen.

Also, whilst I'm resigned to the fact B&S will go through here, that doesn't mean I have to be happy about it.

Aaliyah's 'I Care 4 U': this might be the most moving song we come across in these polls.

It's sort of...twin heartbreaks orbiting each other, his love being rejected and hers being unrequited, and you can hear the absolutely unconditional tenderness and generosity in her voice, but there's still that tentative element of fragility because she can't quite say all she wants to...and what an incredible performance from Aaliyah, every line freighted with meaning and packed with emotion. It's my favourite song off the album that is my default Favourite Album Ever.

Here's a 30-second clip of "Hunt You Down" (like Raw Power-era Stooges, finds the motion, which is impressive since pretty much everyone else trying to do the Stooges gets it wrong).

Toby Keith discovers he's not the strong silent type ("I Wanna Talk About Me"):

Trace Adkins "I'm Tryin'," which by the way I like even more than the Keith. Deep baritone man trying to keep his massive self from breaking down; I guess that's a stereotype but (1) it's done as massively and effectively as I've heard, and yet (2) it's got an unexpected prettiness surrounding it that makes its sadness even sadder but not heavier, and melodically reminds me of the "Lovin' Spoonful" of all people ("Darlin' Be Home Soon" in particular).

Could you say more about them, as I had previously not known they'd existed. "Catch" is the only one that caught me enough on a few listens to get me to tick it; their nominated tracks do the light/dark thing but the dark trips up the light too much. (That's what I think so far. But they are new to me.)

REPPIN' TIME: OSYMYSO

Date: 2009-07-28 12:41 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] infov0re.livejournal.com
Aka: the top trump of bootlegs. At this point, the whole scene veered in a more commercial direction, which made it better for a while, and then everybody got lazy or signed. The former, alas, was the predominant trend; the Freelance Hellraisers and Frenchbloke & Son's of the world were long gone. But in 01-02 it was good, and the sheer audacity of this makes me want to tick the heck out of it:

(long story short: 101 intros to pop songs, one 12-minute track split across two sides of a 12". You keep hearing a song you like, and wanting to dance to it, but then another one kicks in. It is not a good bootleg in that sense, but it is an excellent commentary).

would love to see muse getting a few more votes - i love hyper music, and it is a rare example of a song title perfectly describing what lies within. I guess not many poptimists have secret metal pasts though, so they are doomed not to get through.

Heh, don;t remeber hearing this before except in some distant, half-heard way. It sounds like a cover of folk song that's at least thirty years older than it actually is. "All they got inside is vacancy" is a good lyric, too.

Prolly gonna tick this, just working through my playlist.

Au contraire...it's in 5th place on 17. Jay-Z and Belle & Sebastian (AYYY NOOOO) just behind it on 16. Aaliyah/Shaggy/Jaxx on 15.

I would love, love, love it if 'Heart Of The City' got through, or if somehow Aaliyah got a couple extra ticks from somewhere. Don't know why those two aren't more popular; do people just not own The Blueprint or Aaliyah?

What would I have to do to convince 3-4 of the abstainers from that tiebreak to vote Alicia? I like the DanBed fine but 'Fallin' is a standard. Plus, 'Gotta Get Thru This' was a false harbinger of a very dull career, whereas Alicia went on to more and more brilliance.
