Date: 2009-07-28 04:18 pm (UTC)Obv. you're talking about a particular flavor of jazz 'n' r&b here - kinda retro swing with modern r&b or something; is that fair to say? I mean mixing jazz & r&b pretty much happened as soon as you got r&b, which was kinda a loose amalgam of blues and pop and jazz (and probably some country in there as well) anyway. Anyhow I do find "Hit 'Em Up Style" irresistible, but one thing I liked about, say, Destiny's Child's "Jumpin Jumpin" is that it was mixing retro-jazz-r&b into a sound that still managed to declare itself the future; it's a lot more subtle than "Hit 'Em Up Style." Not that subtle necessarily means better.
(By the way, I forget if I mentioned this, but there's a new Teena Marie album out on Stax.)

Date: 2009-07-28 04:33 pm (UTC)I basically mean jazz/r&b as a more blazingly obvious thing, the R&B beat/vocal paired with a big fat jazz sample and heavy jazz signifiers, the contrast standing out more than anything, contra something like 'Jumpin Jumpin' having internalised its jazz influence such that it doesn't immediately code as jazz.
