Missy Elliott gets the highest turnout of the decade so far, with a whopping 49 votes to win heat #3. Daft Punk, S Club 7 and Mary J Blige are safely through, but Alicia and DanBed tie for fifth - see below for the run-off.

Today's poll sees double J-Lo remix action, microgoth, mashups, possible incest and the Jackson Five (sort of). It's heat #4, everybody!

  • You get a maximum of TEN TICKS over the three bits of the poll. The top five will go through to the next stage.

  • If you want to change your vote (or tick too many by mistake), you can edit your votes by clicking on 'Poll #12345' then 'Fill Out Poll'.

  • UK chart placings given in brackets.

  • You have until Friday lunchtime to vote.

  • Rep for your favourites in the comments! Youtube embeds very welcome.

Why have they never put that one in Guitar Hero, eh?

At the time I was up in arms b/c she'd clearly STOLEN Lina's thing of mixing jazz with R&B and got a hit with it while Lina had flopped but that didn't last long b/c 'Hit Em Up Style' is ridiculously awesome itself - Blu Cantrell does the "wronged trophy wife" thing so well, the woman whose natural response to being cheated on is a spot of credit card fraud, you can almost hear her big hair quivering with outrage. "So I went - to Neiman-Marcus on a shopping spree-ah! And on the way I grabbed Solé and Mia! And as the cashbox rang I thought everything away..."

Who is Lina?

Obv. you're talking about a particular flavor of jazz 'n' r&b here - kinda retro swing with modern r&b or something; is that fair to say? I mean mixing jazz & r&b pretty much happened as soon as you got r&b, which was kinda a loose amalgam of blues and pop and jazz (and probably some country in there as well) anyway. Anyhow I do find "Hit 'Em Up Style" irresistible, but one thing I liked about, say, Destiny's Child's "Jumpin Jumpin" is that it was mixing retro-jazz-r&b into a sound that still managed to declare itself the future; it's a lot more subtle than "Hit 'Em Up Style." Not that subtle necessarily means better.

(By the way, I forget if I mentioned this, but there's a new Teena Marie album out on Stax.)

Lina will be imminently dealt with in, I presume, the next of these polls! I'll probably upload 'Playa No Mo' as and when, as it seems to have disappeared from the internet. Great, great lost R&B record.

I basically mean jazz/r&b as a more blazingly obvious thing, the R&B beat/vocal paired with a big fat jazz sample and heavy jazz signifiers, the contrast standing out more than anything, contra something like 'Jumpin Jumpin' having internalised its jazz influence such that it doesn't immediately code as jazz.

'That saxophone thing is good, isn't it?'

i think it's old Henry Mancini (or Klaus Wunderlich?) - same track 'The Real Slim Shady' was also based on (and something else Dre did i think?)

I remember this from the time (although in my memory, it came out after 'Breathe', rather than before). Was probably the easiest tick in this heat for me.
