2001: A Pop Odyssey! As the Now series gets ever closer to today, a significant first - the first (modern) reality TV pop hit in the form of "Pure And Simple". Also debuting: Gorillaz, Bob The Builder, unlikely Poptimist icons Feeder, and nu-metal in the apologetic shape of Papa Roach.

All Saints' "Pure Shores" won Now 47 - hatas can reflect that it got one of the lowest winning %ages ever, with only 2/3 approval. Modjo second, Nelly third, and EVERYTHING got at least one vote - will we be able to say the same after this poll?

TICKY TO RIDE.

Cut my life into pieces

Let me clarify, I have only ticked Papa Roach due to their absolutely hilarious performance at Reading 2001. I thought I might as well hang around to watch them being as they were betwixt QOTSA and Marilyn Manson and me being right at the front and unable to leave easily.

This is an appalling Now.

Biddly biddly

After years of unfairly dissing them, I finally admitted to myself this weekend that Feeder are actually kinda OK.

Best lyric EVAH! The use of the word "y'all" to denote two people is immensely satisfying.

Also I think 'Whole Again' is really momentous - I was expecting to tick it but Mya popped up at the last minute. Because it's by a group who were on the whole dire, who REALLY can't sing very well, there's not even any clever production (the beat is the most basic of Casio presets), and yet somehow it transcends all of this to become completely heartbreaking and true and soul-searing. I love ballads! (A further example - this is the first Sclub song I've ticked.)

Re 'Stronger' - for ages I thought Our Brit was singing "I'm not your property, I swing both ways".

This one seems a bit rub, for sure: I'm assuming that 'I can't remember them' means that most of these weren't really big hits.

ENDURANCE TESTING

Eva Cassidy > U2 > Stereophonics > Coldplay > Texas

Ouch.

i'm pretty sure almost all of you would like this Modjo track if only you could remember it :(

from now on i'm going to see what's on the NOW and upload any tracks that are good but i suspect people won't remember

weird thing about 'Chillin' is that it turns up in karaoke lists a lot. quite an easy song to do as well but i still always bottle it - and there's the unfamiliarity problem too of course, but good for early doors.

Because I'm worth it

American Dream = excellent marimba noise from that certain Kevin Spacey film MURDERED by overuse in haircare adverts.

You line them up
Look at your shoes
You hang names on your wall
Then you shoot them all

You fly around in planes
That bring you down
To meet me who loves you, like
Me crashing to the ground

If I took my life tonight
Chances are that I might Mutilation out of sight

More people need to remember Kaci. (though to be honest I don't remember it from the time - I harvested it from the internet about two years ago and have wuvved it ever since.)

I think I was the only person not to hear this song in 2001 (being at collej and hence not near an radio or telly or cheesy nightclub and surrounded by Indie on all sides). I first heard it some time last year and it is AMAZING. Shaggy had been quiet for some years but HE BE BACK WIT A BANG!

You know, this is a Now of a time I can remember clearly (the others have all been a bit 'oh, erm, yeah, I'll tick everything I know') ie: when I was fourteen and didn't buy Now compilations, in favour of Kerflange! ones and I feel it's unfair that my age group gets landed with this sort of rubbish to pubesce to. No wonder all the kids have ASBOs these days.

Also, I apologise for ticking U2 but stand by the fact that is actually a good song.

I don't suppose there's any chance "pure and simple" is a Lightning Seeds cover?

Great Tracks On This Now

Is this a generational thing or something? This is an astonishing NOW to me: that Fragma track is one of the loveliest records ever ever ever, Feeder is poptimist-reappropriation-indie heaven, Gorillaz only great or even decent moment is here, the Eva Cassidy is gorgeous, FIVE VOTES FOR SAMANTHA MUMBA!? Nelly, Shaggy, Atomic Kitten all on career-topping form... I guess you can argue that this is year-I-discovered-pop rosy memorisin' but I think this was the year that pop was so great that it burst in on me!
