2001: A Pop Odyssey! As the Now series gets ever closer to today, a significant first - the first (modern) reality TV pop hit in the form of "Pure And Simple". Also debuting: Gorillaz, Bob The Builder, unlikely Poptimist icons Feeder, and nu-metal in the apologetic shape of Papa Roach.

All Saints' "Pure Shores" won Now 47 - hatas can reflect that it got one of the lowest winning %ages ever, with only 2/3 approval. Modjo second, Nelly third, and EVERYTHING got at least one vote - will we be able to say the same after this poll?

"Whole Again" is great, but I was saddened on previous Nows by the total lack of love for the 'Kerry Years', when AK were actually a pretty good, if naff and un-modernist, pop band. This was the peak and end of that period - after this they replace Kerry with Karry-oke (see what I did there), and their legacy is all woe.

as I remember they started off amazingly with 'See Ya' but by the time 'Whole Again' came round they'd very much settled into the really dull, cheap-sounding direness which would follow them to their pop graves with the sole exception of this strange and beautiful MASTERPIECE.

One of the things I really love about 'Whole Again' is how direct it is - there's no attempt at "good" lyrics, or any metaphors whatsoever, it's entirely composed of lines you've heard a thousand times, and it makes you realise that the reason they're clichés is because they're true.

Hmm it seems my impressions were wrong. 'Whole Again' did have that masterpiece-out-of-nowhere feel to it, maybe because everyone had assumed AK had imploded following Kerry's departure.

and if i forgot to ticky it, i'll add it in now. i didn't like whole again cos it was like everything else - pre that they were this unapologetic jumpy round top shop without grace band, and it seemed lije they were trying to "grow up" :-(
