The History Of Pop Part 46 aka You and me baby aint nothin but mammals

In a hard-fought and popular Now 45 poll, Kelis beat Daphne and Celeste by two votes. In Now 46, Britney is back, Kylie is back, Aaliyah is back, and so is Billie (now with surname), but the big debut - in future direction if not in ticks - is Coldplay.

DOUBLE STEPS!

ha ha, i am lost on all of these myself

altho York was a Chris Rea cover so just imagine a Eurohouse beat on that and Rea vox replaced by obligatory black lady.

Angelic = Mrs. Judge Jules. Pretty standard but quite nice Eurotrance.

i have this now and can answer all questions!

[identity profile] cis.livejournal.com 2006-05-22 02:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Angle-ic: standard trance bubbly noise rising, distant girl vocal (i start to worry... about the hands of fate...), certain lack of tune, internal coherence, etc. Never really gets off ground? v v forgettable.
Rank 1: even more forgettable! exact same trance noise in exact same cadence, whispery woman says "i feel you over the airwave", it's maybe a bit bigger but still not quite maximal enough.
Fe-m@il: flee! flee fly! flee fly flo! BISTO! are they singing on nonsense or in spanish? it's somewhere in the middle of all girl-sung novelty singles ever, a bit las ketchup a bit 'c'est la vie' a bit vanilla a bit 'i'd like to give you one for chrustmas' etc. the politeness of their voices is what ruins it, makes it steadfastly mediocre.
York: butch electro trance with diva vocals! has a v recogniseable riff (that also manages to sound like other big trance riffs), some self-echoing synth that sounds like a bizarro-world guitar and swelling strings under it. diva warbles title, no other lyrics i think.
Southside Spinnaz: more trance! quite big-sounding, female singer whisper-groans 'i want ya, i need ya, i feel luuuuv struuuuck.' it's kind of... competent without being quite likeable enough?

- 'Shackles' was my A-level revision song!
- 'Sandstorm' was my Oxford essay crisis song! I don't know how this timing resolves itself. 'Sandstorm' has one of the best breaks EVAH, one of my favouritest memories is trampling over some miserable indie kids in my haste to get to the dancefloor when it got played at a bop
- 'Gotta Tell You' vs 'Day Or Night' in the battle of the Britney copyists - obv both are great but I think Mumba edges it
- 'Girls Like Us', what a song
- oh dear I think Kylie will win but she does not deserve to because of
- AALIYAH. Greatest artist of my lifetime and the only time I've been affected by a celebrity death. I was in Oxford HMV, and someone phoned me, and I had to take a moment in the DVD aisles. I really miss her :(

[identity profile] boyofbadgers.livejournal.com 2006-05-22 01:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I have no recollection of Girls Like Us whatsoever.

I really hope Kylie doesn't win this. The track is OK, good even, but it's sooo mediocre compared to Try Again.

[identity profile] alexmacpherson.livejournal.com 2006-05-22 01:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Completely agreed! I really love the Kylie, but most songs in this world pale next to 'Try Again'. In fact I think 'Try Again' is the best song to feature on any Now album so far

FLOGGING BOY/GIRL BAND HORSE

[identity profile] katstevens.livejournal.com 2006-05-22 01:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Scooch!

Discuss!

In fact, are mixed gender pop groups these days DOOMED to failure in the wake of Steps and Sclub? eg Hearsay? Liberty X had a good bish at it but one good single does not a canon make.

I need a Steps icon.

[identity profile] lockedintheatti.livejournal.com 2006-05-22 01:54 pm (UTC)(link)
It should clearly WIN. This was the period when R&B was creating new masterpiecees almost weekly that were streets ahead of anything else around, and Try Again is one the finest moments.

Re: Nostalgia

[identity profile] boyofbadgers.livejournal.com 2006-05-22 02:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I remember getting v.excited about Timbaland going rave and banging on to all and sundry about some sort of uber-two-step-rave-r'n'b collision as being the next logical step for UK dance music. That what we actually got was Grime seems incredibly disappointing in retrospect.

[identity profile] bengraham.livejournal.com 2006-05-22 02:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Several of my favourite late-90s pop tracks appearing all together on this one fine compilation.

Sonique, Mary Mary, Darude and Aaliyah are all fantastic tracks. It's a shame this Now is let down so badly by the third section. What's the record number of people ticking the "None of These" box on a single section of a Now?

Since Britney is leading...

"Oops!" is to "...Baby, One More Time" as Godfather Part II is to The Godfather. Discuss.

Re: I did it again... better?

[identity profile] alexmacpherson.livejournal.com 2006-05-22 02:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't understand what a Godfather is but if you mean 'better version of' then yes, totally - it's the template getting better, stronger, harder (as it were).

The upwards trajectory goes Baby One More Time => Oops I Did It Again => Stronger => Overprotected, at which point she abandoned the template in favour of equally amazing Neptunes stuff and also 'Toxic'.

Time.

"The Bad Touch" is actually a great song now that wankers aren't listening to it daily.

Re: Just like Coca Cola stocks you are inclined to make me rise an hour early just like Daylight Sav

[identity profile] chezghost.livejournal.com 2006-05-22 03:12 pm (UTC)(link)
good lyrics but i had the misfortune of seeing them perform this live at Glastonbury 2000 and they had the brassy bit playing on a loop for about 10 minuets just so they could change and do their 'let's take the piss out of N-Synch' routine which was duly rubbish.

'Mope' is way better tho.

Yellow

[identity profile] blue-russian.livejournal.com 2006-05-22 02:42 pm (UTC)(link)
At the risk of being booted from the club, I have to say I really love this song, despite the long furrow that Chris et al have ploughed since then. I remember perfectly the first time I heard it. 'Twas a classic evening in the pub when I suddenly realized I heard something beautiful and mesmerizing coming out of the television. What was it? Twangy, droning guitar and that voice.
