In a hard-fought and popular Now 45 poll, Kelis beat Daphne and Celeste by two votes. In Now 46, Britney is back, Kylie is back, Aaliyah is back, and so is Billie (now with surname), but the big debut - in future direction if not in ticks - is Coldplay.

SHE IS THE GREATEST ARTIST OF OUR GENERATION AND SHE HAS THE MOST AMAZINGEST VOICE I HAVE EVER HEARD AND I. LOVE. HER.

SHE IS ALSO LARGELY CHARACTERLESS eg SHE WAS JUST BEGINNING TO IMPINGE ON MY CONSCIOUSNESS WHEN SHE WENT AND DIED, AND EVERY TIME SOMEONE HAS PLAYED ME A SONG BY HER SORRY everytime some one has played me a song by her my attention wanders off halfway through so why do people keep insisting that it was a great and tragic loss that I should feel personally?

I agree actually. I think Aaliyah had a 'personality problem' akin to Girls Aloud but worse. It could've been part of her appeal in an odd way and perhaps you could say the same about Monica too. Sweet voices but lacking real power and they were totally carried by great production.

Brandy benefitted by starring in Moesha so could endear herself to people more that way. I never saw Aaliyah in Romeo Must Die but it could've been anyone playing the Queen of the Damned let's face it.

Aaliyah had no personality problem! Neither do GA!!!

I have never heard any other singer who manages to be simultaneously cold and warm in the same way Aaliyah did.

I like R&B when I remember it eg I have ticked Jamelia to encourage her, because she will someday make Superstar and Thank You.

Good point, though.

Characterless is the last thing Aaliyah was! She had this amazing gift of completely, completely and wholly inhabiting her songs in such a way as to be quite perturbing. She was only beginning to impinge on yr consciousness because prior to her third album her critical and commercial success was mostly confined to the US.

it's hard to pinpoint my prob with Aaliyah (not doing enough happy-smiley songs maybe? or just not sounding fun enough?) but whatever it was it didn't stop me enjoying her hits, which i generally did - although i did think 'Try Again' was quite dull at first and it was the other singles from the time that grabbed me more. go figure.

Yeah she didn't do many happy-smiley songs - she always brought this quite dark edge to even the glorious swooping ones like 'More Than A Woman', cf dubdobdee's "she is a GOTH" angle which is quite right actually
