Yes, Timbaland = one of THEE key figures in making r&b acceptable to people who did not yet consider themselves to be popist, if they ever would, because Timbaland = AN AUTEUR. Or that was the theory - I seem to remember that this was pushed very hard by people like The Face - "he's the r&b RZA!" - which was the only way a lot of people at that point, me included, were going to accept it critically, even if instinctively we had already started to love the music.

Yeah there's an ILM thread of mine from around this time which gets resurrected every year when Tim makes a stinker (or a banger), called "Timbaland Is The Greatest Producer Of All Time". He seemed like it, anyway.
