In a hard-fought and popular Now 45 poll, Kelis beat Daphne and Celeste by two votes. In Now 46, Britney is back, Kylie is back, Aaliyah is back, and so is Billie (now with surname), but the big debut - in future direction if not in ticks - is Coldplay.

Characterless is the last thing Aaliyah was! She had this amazing gift of completely, completely and wholly inhabiting her songs in such a way as to be quite perturbing. She was only beginning to impinge on yr consciousness because prior to her third album her critical and commercial success was mostly confined to the US.

it's hard to pinpoint my prob with Aaliyah (not doing enough happy-smiley songs maybe? or just not sounding fun enough?) but whatever it was it didn't stop me enjoying her hits, which i generally did - although i did think 'Try Again' was quite dull at first and it was the other singles from the time that grabbed me more. go figure.

Yeah she didn't do many happy-smiley songs - she always brought this quite dark edge to even the glorious swooping ones like 'More Than A Woman', cf dubdobdee's "she is a GOTH" angle which is quite right actually
