Pop World Cup: There will be NO PWC match this week, this is because of a number of things, partly me being really busy, partly some format fiddling. So next Monday we will have TWO matches, and the week afer we will have another TWO. This means that I need MP3s from [livejournal.com profile] julietk and [livejournal.com profile] cis by this weekend, and MP3s from [livejournal.com profile] atommickbrane, [livejournal.com profile] katstevens, [livejournal.com profile] stevem78 and [livejournal.com profile] juror8 by NEXT weekend. There!

So in lieu of other orgafun let's take a quick look at the state of the Poptimist nation, April 25th 2006. I was going to do these questions as a poll but actually, it makes much more sense to just list 'em and you can put yr answers in the comments.

1/ What was the last piece of music you bought?
2/ Was it any good?
3/ What was the first piece of music you ever bought?
4/ Is it still any good?
5/ What was the last gig/show you went to, and when?
6/ Tell us a record that people who know you would be surprised you like?
7/ Tell us a current record that you hate?
8/ If a casual acquaintance asks you what sort of music you listen to, what do you actually say?
9/ Tell us something you want to hear but haven't got around to yet?
10/ What are you listening to RIGHT NOW?

1/ It was the 7" of "The Operator" by Barbara Morgenstern... a week before Jel posted the mp3 link on [livejournal.com profile] sukrat. Curses ;)
2/ I LOVE IT! IT GO BLEEP!
3/ The first thing I can remember buying was the 7" of "Tarzan Boy" by Baltimora, from a neighbour who was selling it for like 10p or something... the first thing I remember buying in an actual SHOP was an A-Ha single, or perhaps a Kylie or Roxette album.
4/ All of the above are still ace, obv.
5/ The last gig I went to was the Fortuna Pop! all dayer at the Brixton Windmill last Monday; bands included The Loves, The Chemistry Experiment, Finlay, Fanfarlo and my very own lovely Silver Springs. I did rather enjoy it.
6/ "Dakota" by the Stereophonics is a Stereophonics song that doesn't make me turn off the radio when it comes on. It kind of reminds me of Tom Petty. I like some Tom Petty stuff too.
7/ Anything by the Arctic C0cking Monkeys.
8/ "Indie. Well, not chart indie, not like Coldplay and that... kind of louder stuff, like the Pixies. And bleepy electronic music. Have you heard of Orbital" etc etc etc...
9/ MORE by DJ Koze, after he cancelled at Fabric the other night.
10/ Rio (the album) by Duran Duran - am up to "Lonely In Your Nightmare"

Sorry if my fecklessness buggered up the PWC Tom!

1) Bought? I never buy records these days. Actually I did buy Bryan Ferry's 'These Foolish Things' from Fopp a few weeks ago, cos I needed change for the bus.
2) It is hilarious!
3) Nik Kershaw 'Wouldn't it be good?'
4) Not really, but I have a sentimental soft spot for it.
5) Double G and the traitorous 3 last night!
6) Dunno... Jeff Buckley's 'Grace'?!
7) Orson 'No Tomorrow'.
8) The same as everyone: "all sorts, really".
9) Soft Machine.
10) Office ambience. Most recently a David Axelrod compilation which I was sent ages ago and only just got around to listening to, and which has slightly blown my mind.

1/ Three techno compilations and Ibiza Anthems 2.
2/ Yes! They are all wonderful. A pleasant surprise.
3/ I asked [livejournal.com profile] graciousviv to get me George Michael & Urethra Franklin's Knew You Were Waiting For Me on 7" when I were a nipper. Which she did. With my own money though, it was probably Now 25.
4. Oh yes.
5. Does Superpitcher @ Fabric on Saturday count as a gig?
6. Hahahah everyone knows I be an indie kid rly. I have an enormous soft spot for System Of A Down though - I don't really like much other heavy stuff these days.
7. I'm not CRAZY abt Gnarls Barkley GEDDIT
8. I say BOSH and start sparkling my hands at them and dancing about.
9. The entire Kompakt back catalogue.
10. Mimic - Some White Guy (Marco Lenzi Remix).

1/ The Souljazz 'Big Apple Rapping' CD.

2/ I have listened to the first half of the first CD and it is totally ace!

3/ Wish I could remember. Possibly Hits 5 on tape.

4/ Some of it must still be good. It had Red Box on it you know!

5/ Sunburned Hand of the Man, about six weeks ago.

6/ ? Depends how well they know me, I guess.

7/ Gnarls Berkley.

8/ k-lame 'All sorts'. Or I do the 'at the moment I'm listening to a lot of...' answer.

9/ Baltimore club music.

10/ Sounds of the world outside my window.

1/ What was the last piece of music you bought?
Girls Aloud, Chemistry

2/ Was it any good?
Yes! Initial disappointment was only relative to v high standard the Girls had set. Now the dust has settled, 'It's Magic' and 'Whole Lotta History' are my favourite songs.

3/ What was the first piece of music you ever bought?
Now Dance 91 or some such boshing compilation

4/ Is it still any good?
Yes! I can't remember what exactly was on it though, and sadly it got chewed up by my old tape player years ago.

5/ What was the last gig/show you went to, and when?
Shimura Curves at the Windmill, last night. They were Very Good. 'Noyfriend' was particularly storming.

6/ Tell us a record that people who know you would be surprised you like?
I am not sure what could possibly shock the Poptimist community any more about my taste.

7/ Tell us a current record that you hate?
New Streets single is one that I really actively hate, this is partly because I still don't understand how he went from so good to so bad so suddenly.

8/ If a casual acquaintance asks you what sort of music you listen to, what do you actually say?
Depends on context, whether they seem actively interested in music and so on in which case I might name specific artists, but usually "er electro er hip hop and r&b er house er pop er" and they look confused.

9/ Tell us something you want to hear but haven't got around to yet?
Ha, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs album, Anna-Marie burnt it for me but I haven't been in the right headspace for it yet. Also the new Roman Flügel album popped through the letterbox the other day, I meant to listen to it on the way to work today but was scuppered by an overwhelming need for Ellen Allien.

10/ What are you listening to RIGHT NOW?
In my head is an imagined Jacques Lu Cont remix of the Pet Shop Boys' 'Flamboyant' which pisses all over the original.

2/ are you kidding. is ace
3/ first album i can recall buying = Clannad's Legend. OH YEAH WANNA MAKE SOMETHING OF IT
4/ of course it is. in a very limited sense
5/ Ladytron at Koko last year i think.
6/ "surprised" is tricky. I have some prog/ambient stuff, Porcupine Tree and Ecstasy of st Theresa from the mid90s i don't talk about much
7/ i don't think i do - there's loads of indie-ish stuff around now that i like the sound of but haven't taken the time to find out what they are (see 9)
8/ "oh stuff, pop and some less well knows electronic bits and pieces"
9/ i'm in a musical interest slump to be honest, so loads

1/ What was the last piece of music you bought?
Luciano's Sci-Fi-Hi-Fi 2 mix on Soma.

2/ Was it any good?
Yes! Top quality fluffy microtech.

3/ What was the first piece of music you ever bought?
I honestly can't remember! First 'proper' album possibly Joshua Tree (I was a relatively late starter). Or maybe even Whitesnake's 1987 of all things. There were odd singles and Now comps and the like before then. Come to think of it, it might have been the original Do They Know It's Christmas.

4/ Is it still any good?
No, not really. Though I still like some U2.

5/ What was the last gig/show you went to, and when?
Last night, to see Double G and the Traitorous 3 (plus 2). It was ace, very much looking forward to the the new album.

6/ Tell us a record that people who know you would be surprised you like?
I dunno, I'm fairly public about my tastes. Maybe Pink Floyd's Meddle album?

7/ Tell us a current record that you hate?
The Fall Out Boy single I saw on Saturday telly was truly rotten.

8/ If a casual acquaintance asks you what sort of music you listen to, what do you actually say?
Lots of things, old indie, pop, house and techno, got back into metal recently, folky stuff, bits of hip hop.

9/ Tell us something you want to hear but haven't got around to yet?
The new Ellen Allien + Apparat Album.

10/ What are you listening to RIGHT NOW?
New FADS - A Man Without Qualities

1/ I bought the new Ladytron album and the new Morrissey album.
2/ The former is excellent. I am not sure that the latter is worth the fuss, even if he is all about the gay sex these days.
3/ 'I should be so lucky' by Kylie, on 12 inch (the shop was out of 7 inches).
4/ Yes, it's excellent.
5/ Chumbawamba at the Croydon Cartoon. Gig of the year!
6/ I like a lot of Cliff Richard, which surprises people who don't know me, and I rather like noisy drone music, which surprises people who DO.
7/ I have just studied the top 40 and Radio 1 playlist and can't see anything I hate on it, but admittedly I haven't heard most of it. No hating here!
8/ Erm, a lot of different stuff. Or "I like indie rock!", which is both fairly untrue and very embarrassing.
9/ I'd like to hear the new Nelly Furtado single. I hear it's ace.
10/ Operation Wolf!

1/ We Are Scientists - With Love & Squalor

2/ Yes, it's great. At times, a little bit emo for my liking, but they have a knack for a riff and some great lyrics. I saw them live supporting Hard-Fi before Xmas, but only just got around to buying their album now. I think the best thing about them is that they look like the Beastie Boys did in the video to Sabotage.

3/ 'Up' by Right Said Fred *hangs head in shame

4/ Is it still any good? Was it ever any good? No, clearly not.

5/ *Checks his Gigography (http://bengraham.livejournal.com/110045.html)... er, that would be Jenny Lewis at The Spitz in February. I'm due a gig soon then. Matisyahu's coming up quite soon. And I might be going to The Slits' free gig at Vibe Bar on Sunday.

6/ The people who know me know the sort of stuff that I like. I guess had I not been raving about it for the last few months that my friends would have been surprised to hear I'm a big fan of the new Girls Aloud album. But to you lot, it's probably not exactly breaking news.

7/ Oooh, so many current records to hate, not enough time to hate them all. Arctic Monkees for a start. Just because I don't see any difference between them and The Libertines. Corinne Bailey Rae, James Blunt (obviously), Morrissey, these are all really rubbish albums too.

8/ I usually say that I listen to anything and everything and that my tastes are very diverse. Then they quiz me further and I struggle to name anything that's not mainstream. I do listen to plenty of non-mainstream music, it's just that I don't listen to it as often as I've got Xfm or some old favourite album on. Recently I've been listening to some samba I bought in Brazil, to some drum'n'bass (Pendulum), lots of Girls Aloud, plenty of electro (LCD Soundsystem, Infadels), lots of emo (Fall Out Boy, Panic @ The Disco, My Chemical Romance, new Placebo), and the new Yeah Yeah Yeahs album. Plus Matisyahu. Is that diverse enough for you?

9/ I do really want to hear the new Grandaddy stuff just as soon as it is released. Plus the new Killa Kela album, and the Akala album. I'm intrigued to hear what Dirty Pretty Things come out with after the average effort of their first single. And everyone... I mean EVERYONE should go and hear the song that is dividing music fans across the country. You will either think it is the best thing since sliced bread, or you'll want to rip your own ears off. It's Lily Allen's 'LDN' and you can hear it on her Myspace (http://www.myspace.com/lilymusic).

1. I ordered something from Amazong Marketplace this morning (which obv I haven't heard yet). The last thing I bought which I have listened to is the Jarvis Cocker-and-that-other-bloke-out-of-Pulp's "The Trip" compilation.

2. Yes! Essentially it's a 'Back to Ours' but it's a cut above most comps of this type. They've unearthed several forgotten nuggets - I particularly enjoyed Elton Motello's "Jet Boy Jet Girl" (= "Ca Plane Pour Moi" with extremely in-your-face gay lyrics) and a truly weird bit of clanking noise by Lieutenant Pigeon called "The Villain".

3. Erm, possibly Elton John's Honky Chateau

4. It's as good as it always was, i.e. about 80% good.

5. Stockhausen, last night (see [livejournal.com profile] sukrat for details). I dread to think how long ago I last went to a concert/gig before that tho!

6. Arctic Monkeys: both their first two singles were ace! I heard the album on an aeroplane recently, at that sounded quite good too. Only the hideous cover art is stopping me buying it!

7. 'Hate' is a very strong word. (If pressed: I'm not keem on Shayne Ward's singles. The definition of bland.)

8. What [livejournal.com profile] thenipper said.

9. Artists: Harmonia, Evie Sands, Chantal Goya, Hot Chip; Albums: too many to mention, but Talking Heads '77 came to mind first. This is not counting the large pile of unplayed CDs on my living room floor at home grrr.

10. The office ambience.

1/ What was the last piece of music you bought? Yesterday, I bought the double 7" of tracks from the new Gainsbourg Revisited album; Architecture in Helsinki's most recent album; a compilation of Transgressive Records releases (with bonus DVD of teh Pipettes, &c); and a 7" I bought off e-Bay by early and largely forgotten NZ indie band The Shallows arrived. 2/ Was it any good? The Gainsbourg stuff isn't exactly great, but more to the point it isn't in French either. The Transgressive compilation is indie rock, what of it? The AIH album is top stuff, with lots of harmonies and electronic bits and bobbins, and nice melodies: it make me happy. The Shallows are brilliant doomy underground lo-fi NZ home-made rock music, with the guitar-y drones and deep bass singing of Roy Montgomery (this was their only release though, 1985). 3/ What was the first piece of music you ever bought? My answer is strangely similar to [livejournal.com profile] boyofbadgers above (minus the Whitesnake). Probably either "Do They Know It's Christmas", or maybe "Dancing in the Street" by Mick + David. 4/ Is it still any good? Latter: um... Former: not really, though Sarah may try to convince you of the bit where the popstars as was read out statistics over the top of the music. Was that on this single? 5/ What was the last gig/show you went to, and when? Calexico with Iron & Wine, at the Forum, on Sunday evening. 6/ Tell us a record that people who know you would be surprised you like? I'm sure nothing I like surprises anyone who knows me, though they like to make fun of Girls Aloud, but as we all know, they are wrong. 7/ Tell us a current record that you hate? I have no fondness for a lot of chart music, but I don't hate it, just make no effort to listen to it. 8/ If a casual acquaintance asks you what sort of music you listen to, what do you actually say? "Oh, stuff, things, I don't know... what do you like?" then the conversation kinda stops. 9/ Tell us something you want to hear but haven't got around to yet? Well, now yr all exciting me by talking of Nelly Furtado, which isn't something I was expecting. But I want to hear most of what gets discussed here, but I'm not a very good poptimist really, am I? 10/ What are you listening to RIGHT NOW? Nothing! Office! Quiet!

1/ The Neko Case album, and the Euros Childs album.

2/ The former is fantastic, the latter has been listened to only once so far, and I can’t remember anything about it. Sorry Euros.

3/ Debut by Bjork

4/ I think so.

5/ The Knife, the other week. Although I did have to endure 90 minutes of Listen Lisse in a local bar last week, but this was not intended.

6/ Gregorian chant. Or Roy Harper.

7/ Can’t think of anything right now.

8/ ‘A range of stuff, indieish, er, I can’t actually remember, sorry, what about you, oh James Blunt, right, no, I don’t like him, other stuff, I mean’

9/ This is hard. There’s a lot. More Neko Case, and Nina Nastasia. Random things that I feel I should have heard but somehow haven’t, like solo Nico, and Francois Hardy. Also, see question 2.

10/ Ask Elvis, on the Steve Wright show, on Radio 2.

1/ Umm...A couple of of months ago I made "honesty purchases" of things I'd listened to a lot on MP3. Let's say the last was "Tales from Turnpike House" by Saint Etienne.
2/ Yeah, I guess it's good, although I haven't listened to it much.
3/ A cassette of the White Album.
4/ God, I haven't listened to the White Album since it was released on CD. (And maybe not even then).
5/ The Go! Team in january.
6/ Although I'm pretty open about my poptismism, Girls Aloud would definitely draw some looks.
7/ I don't listen to the radio, so I don't hear anything that I hate more than once.
8/ An awkward silence ensues as I try to formulate a good answer to such an important question. Then I say "Lots of stuff."
9/ Cornelius - Fantasma (investigating all that Shibuya-Kei stuff lately)
10/ World Service news, actually (sorry)

1/ What was the last piece of music you bought?
Girls Aloud's 'Chemistry' album on CD via Amazon, finally. Also bought Depeche Mode remixes and some of the 'SOFAD' singles for...research...

2/ Was it any good?
If it wasn't I would not have bought it.

3/ What was the first piece of music you ever bought?
De La Soul's 'Three Feet High & Rising' album on cassette.

4/ Is it still any good?
If something is good at the time I tend to think it stays that way even though tastes and fashions change. So yes.

5/ What was the last gig/show you went to, and when?
I went to see The Knife a couple of weeks ago and it was pretty good.

6/ Tell us a record that people who know you would be surprised you like?
Hmm. Something by Aqua maybe. Or Ace Of Base's 'Life Is A Flower'. This surprises me too.

7/ Tell us a current record that you hate?
Pussycat Dolls ft. WillIAm 'Beep'. Broing.

8/ If a casual acquaintance asks you what sort of music you listen to, what do you actually say?
HI DERE WAHT IS IT MADE?

9/ Tell us something you want to hear but haven't got around to yet?
The new Ghostface album.

10/ What are you listening to RIGHT NOW?
Nothing but tested my new £100 headphones last night using Grace Jones 'Slave To The Rhythm'. Wibble.

1/ Adem - Love and other planets. I have bought way too many albums lately, I blame Amazon marketplace. I'll never get into MP3's.
2/ It's okay, I may end up hating it and dismissing it as hippy nonsense. It might be okay for sleeping to.
3/ Prince - Batdance, though my mum was with me in the shop, the first I bought on my own was "Seventh Son of a Seventh Son" by Iron Maiden
4/ I don't have Batdance anymore, it's probably rubbish. Iron Maiden are still great
5/ Silver Jews, last night, it was okay, I was kinda in a crappy mood so didn't enjoy it so much.
6/ I can't really think of anything that would surprise people. Hmmm, Dixie Chicks "Wide Open Spaces", oh, but you're not surprised. Everything I listen to and like is instantly moulded into the jel-sphere.
7/ I think I rather dislike that Biggie song with every rapper ever on it.
8/ I just say Bon Jovi
9/ I would like Tom Petty's greatest hits
10/ Adem. But I might something else on.

It was a good day to ask Q5

1/ Miles Davis' *In a Silent Way* and The Ornette Coleman Trio's *At the "Golden Circle" Stockholm, Volume One*

2/ The Ornette's OK, but makes me wonder if I have no feel for post-bop. Miles is Miles is fucking fantastic.

3/ The Academy of St Martin-in-the-Fields' verz. of Vivaldi's *The Four Seasons*; The Police's "Every Breath You Take" 45; Michael Jackson's *Thriller*.

4/ I don't think I've heard the Vivaldi in nearly twenty years. I don't think I've emotionally responded to "Every Breath" in fifteen -- oldies earwash. I put on *Thriller* last week and it still sounds aMAYzing: MJ at his most bullshit-free.

5/ The Mountain Goats last winter.

6/ I don't think there's a single record I know that could be described this way -- I'm an open book, baby.

7/ Comments made in private about Daniel Powter's "Bad Day": "MEWLING ACOUSTICIZED WHITEBOY SONG" and "If Elton John was a gunslinger, he'd sure look funny."

8/ "EVERYTHING." "Everything? "EVERYTHING."

9/ I want to get those collector-porn recordings of all the Bach cantatas that John Eliot Gardiner conducted all over the world.

10/ I'm listening to two co-workers discussing AIA documents.

1. Lorraine's "I Feel it" CD & the new Moz album. [Although I've had a few freebies from work since then]
2. Nice chorus but I've stopped playing it already / Better than the last one overall but nothing as good as First of the Gang to Die (my fave Moz solo single). And certainly not as good as the reviewers seem to think
3. Never / These Dreams (Double A Side) 7" single by Heart
4. Yes. Although I think this maybe for sentimental reasons, not sure I'd liek it if it was released now
5. Dead Disco at Club Motherfucker a couple of weeks ago, and it were ace.
6. Michelle Shocked. Probably the only artist of that genre I like.
7. Shane Ward, Corinne Bailey Rae, Juanes from the current top 40 as particularly loathesome
8. Indie and electronic stuff (even though I like a lot of pop and dance too, but being a gay people tend to assume I'll like those anyway so I focus on the other stuff)
9. New Knife album, new Barbara Morgenstern album, Robocop Kraus album (which I've been meaning to buy for ages but not got round to it)
10.Ian Brown's greatest hits, which has just come onto the office stereo.

1/ What was the last piece of music you bought?
A CD by this composer called Jakob Ullmann - "a catalogue of sounds" - its this piece for 12 strings + string trio.

2/ Was it any good? Got the shop to put it on for a short listen and it sounded great even with all the traffic outside. Incredibly intense, esp late at night when there's no one about. The root of its grebtness is its avoidance of its romantic past, its roots.

3/ What was the first piece of music you ever bought?
Can't recall - first CD i ever borrowed from the library was Joy Div 'Substance' compilation. Paid 60p for two weeks.

4/ Is it still any good? Not heard it for a long time - might revisit later.

5/ What was the last gig/show you went to, and when? Gig at the ivory house in Peckham: the Klinker 'Club'. Improvised stuff, movies, poetry, had this 'all sorts' policy leading to unexpected things - had this indie-ish band that ws pretty bad. Improv ws gd, esp the improvised violin as 'response' to DIY movie.

6/ Tell us a record that people who know you would be surprised you like? Well, been enjoying those dance-y cover versions of past chart hits (from the likes of yes, roxette) that keep being churned out, all those that seemed to start w/'call on me' which wsn't v gd (but the original isn't anyway). Meant to compile something but haven't got round to it.
7/ Tell us a current record that you hate?
I am a man of peace these days.
8/ If a casual acquaintance asks you what sort of music you listen to, what do you actually say? It depends, if i know this person is into music I try to say something along the lines of "well, something i've been enjoying lately is..", if not then the stock ans applies.
9/ Tell us something you want to hear but haven't got around to yet? A recording of Messiaen's Turangalila Symphony from the early 50s
10/ What are you listening to RIGHT NOW? nuffink
