Pop World Cup: There will be NO PWC match this week, this is because of a number of things, partly me being really busy, partly some format fiddling. So next Monday we will have TWO matches, and the week afer we will have another TWO. This means that I need MP3s from [livejournal.com profile] julietk and [livejournal.com profile] cis by this weekend, and MP3s from [livejournal.com profile] atommickbrane, [livejournal.com profile] katstevens, [livejournal.com profile] stevem78 and [livejournal.com profile] juror8 by NEXT weekend. There!

So in lieu of other orgafun let's take a quick look at the state of the Poptimist nation, April 25th 2006. I was going to do these questions as a poll but actually, it makes much more sense to just list 'em and you can put yr answers in the comments.

1/ What was the last piece of music you bought?
2/ Was it any good?
3/ What was the first piece of music you ever bought?
4/ Is it still any good?
5/ What was the last gig/show you went to, and when?
6/ Tell us a record that people who know you would be surprised you like?
7/ Tell us a current record that you hate?
8/ If a casual acquaintance asks you what sort of music you listen to, what do you actually say?
9/ Tell us something you want to hear but haven't got around to yet?
10/ What are you listening to RIGHT NOW?

1. Under Achievers Please Try Harder by Camera Obscura.
2. I don't know, it arrived in the post today while I was at work. I'll put it on now though. Ooh, the first few bars sound nice.
3. Wuthering Heights by Kate Bush.
4. Yes, although i listen to it less these days.
5. The Wonder Stuff gig in Islington on March 15th.
6. Don't know really. Lemon Jelly is probably the least stereotypically me stuff that I like.
7. Current, as in in the charts now? Fvck knows. 90% of them probably, grumble grumble old man.
8. Indie pop.
9. The Mountain Goats album that [livejournal.com profile] hoshuteki told me to buy when I asked him which Mountain Goats album to buy. I ordered it off of cdwow.com ages ago and they haven't sent it yet. It was so long ago I an't even remember which album it was.
10. See Q1/2. I'm into track 2 now and I've decided it is good.

1. I've been getting most of my music either as promos or when the good fairy sneaks things under my pillow, but last December I swooped into my local record store and traded for these: Kelly Clarkson Breakaway, Madonna Confessions on a Dance Floor, Lil Wayne Tha Carter II, Jessica Simpson "Irresistible" (single), *NSync Greatest Hits.

2. I like almost all, Madonna the least, surprisingly, all the lushness not compensating for the lack of tunefulness. Kelly's got fire in her eyes, pain in her heart, and goth on her turntable. Wayne's got soul singers from Transylvanian and covers Iron Maiden. Jessica's irresistible when she's up close and personal, not that I'd know. *NSync are pop, they're gone, they're tearin' up my heart, they want me back.

3. First piece of music boughten by me'en was The Kingston Trio Sold Out, or the Kingston Trio String Along, or the Kingston Trio Sunny Side.

4. The Kingston Trio records are still good rollicking banjo-y hilarity and drama.

5. A couple of weeks ago at the Larimer Lounge, my friend Nathan Perry performed solo acoustic country and alt-country, originals mostly but also Roger Williams and Guns N' Roses ("Mr. Brownstone").

6. Um, my friends are aware at this point that I'm capable of anything, but they might be surprised by my liking for Pearl Jam's "Black," though they shouldn't be, since it's a good song. (Maybe they'd be surprised at my liking a good song.) I don't own any Pearl Jam albums, so I can't yet surprise them with those.

7. A current record I hate is the Madonna, though I suppose it's not all that bad.

8. I listen to disco and teenpop and Europop and hip-hop and country and reggaeton and I'm beginning to re-explore goth and singer-songwriters (as ILX fans know, I just got Ani and Alanis from the library) and the gypsy-techno-balkan thing that rock, paper, scissors just sent me and the techno-tango thing that Beggars Banquet just sent me and the neo-new-wavish glammy power pop thing that I can't remember who sent me, but it's pretty good (the band is The 88).

9. Anthony convinced me that I want to listen to the new Kris Kristofferson, which is sitting on my pile. Also disk two of the Brenda Lee comp a friend made for me. Also last year's Backstreet Boys, which the local library's got but which my dedication to Ashlee forced me to forgo in favor of Ani and Alanis, at least one if not both of whom are influences on the anxious Ashdeity.

10. I am listening to "Like A Rolling Stone" by Bob Dylan, who's in the Ashdeity's ancestry, whether she knows it or not. (Actually was listening to Dylan several minutes ago; am now listening to radiator noise, but not very attentively.)

No, Nathan did not perform Roger Williams, or Andy Williams, or the William Tell Overture, or "My Humps" f. Will.i.am, or anything William at all. He performed Roger Miller.

Or perhaps I'm confusing the radiator with the plumbing.
