A new Now poll a day early thanks to the world cup mix-up, Now 20 takes us into the second half of 1991. Notable by its absence is Bryan Adams, whose 16 weeks at #1 was smack in this 'catchment area' and no doubt priced him right out of the compilers' reach. Still, why worry when you have Julian Lennon and Glass Tiger? Note MUCH FUN had by the compilers with track order, especially the U2/PSB segue.

Now 19 was won by a single vote for Massive over the KLF - the cock-up with radio buttons thankfully happened with one of the worst track sequences we've yet seen though if you want to think Innuendo wuz robbed, don't let me stop you. Lots of stuff to talk about on this one so let's get on with it shall we?

[Poll #664430]

NB: "Full length version"?? They can't actually mean that, can they?

because it's:

a. dreadful
b. AMAZINGLY rockist
c. the preserve of acoustical night tw@s who say "one more song" and then do a THREE HOUR version of it
d. rugby teams singing it
e. the whole concept that everything's been rub since buddy holly died (but AAAHH, don mclean, AAAHH, that includes you, DO YOU SEE???)

i could go on...

Is it just that one song (WHICH I TICKED AND I AM NOT ASHAMED) that you detest, or the entire of Mr MacLean's output?

see, i think vincent is just about passable, at least it's PROPER drippy, AP is just trying to be forthright and umphy, whereas, in fact, it is DRIPPY

Vincent I have never been that fond of. (Although I appear to know all the words *anyway*. Oh well. They are now in my head and I will sing them at you later.)

There's a picture of his Greatest Hits at the bottom of the article linked below, which includes Castles In The SkyAir and for a second my memory went wonky and I thought he'd written Seasons in the Sun, in which case he would actually have been the Moriarty of Pop!

It was the Madonna version which made me realise that it had a decent tune!

It's just one of those songs which is always there (though not too much there as in the ways carsmile outlines)

"I know that you're in love with him cos I saw you dancing in the gym"

I can't tell if you're joking or not but isn't it GIN not gym? As in GIN BLOSSOMS (oh noes)

Anyway I hate 'American Pie' although the rockist in me grudgingly deems it to be 'well written' if far far far far too long

The Madonna cover is abysmal and her absolute nadir IMO.

"the jester sang for the king and queen, in a coat he borrowed from james dean" is WORSE.

also if this is the FULL version there are verses, like in the national anthem, that you have never heard (and are probably about killing scottishes)

I can see how that is a bad line when it is written down but it works brilliantly on a phonetic level! All those v sounds!
