The History Of Pop Part 51 aka Are we having fun yet?

What fun we had with Now 50, which Kylie won at a canter, though with decent shouts from Britney and Bouncy. Kylie takes her place next to S Club in the pop and poll hall of fame. Sadly I have to report that Now 51 is less obviously glittering, though obviously your mileage may wobble. Some definite highlights though as we slide gently into 2002. And big hellos to Daniel Bedroomeyes, Christina Milian and...Nickelback!

just what, what, what I'm gonna
Do about my destiny
I say no-no-nobody's telling me
Just what I wanna do
I'm so fed up with people
Telling me to be -----
Someone else but MAAAEEEEEEEYYYYYY

For Ja Rule featuring Ashanti -- Always on Time. This is a great track!! Overall this Now isn't terrible, I'd say: several ace tracks, and a fair few not too bad (e.g Bedingfield's best single; a decent Blue song). Some real horrors and a fair few 'eh?'s as well.

It really is, those swooping synth strings and her VOICE - and it seemed so fitting as a posthumous No 1, too, not in a morbid way at all but a fitting way to remember her.

I love the weird production touch at the end when the strings somehow get disjointed ever so slightly from the beat.

grime, hang yr head etc

i dislike 'Lazy' in a way - i think the lyrics are really trite and annoying.

Goldtrix presents Andrea Brown - Trippin

[identity profile] chezghost.livejournal.com 2006-06-08 11:44 am (UTC)(link)
stringy handbag with a tinge of foreboding:

They say I'm crazy, the way you got me open, baby
They say I'm buggin', the way I'm tight sweatin' your lovin'
They all sit and wonder why the reason this I cannot hide
It ain't a question of pride

They say I'm trippin', the way you got my whole life flippin'
They say I'm losin' it, just can't seem to keep my grip, baby
We all cry when we feel pain, when love is gone we're not the same
It ain't a question of brains

Crazy, the way you got me open, baby
They say I'm buggin', the way I'm tight sweatin' your lovin'

They say I'm slippin' the way you got my whole life flippin'
They say I'm losin' it, just can't seem to get my grip, baby

They all sit and wonder why the reason this I cannot hide
It ain't a question of pride

remember it now? no? aw well

Nickleback to me means this is actually really The Present.

And yes yes, it's an appaling caterwauling, and the Stereophonics remain as kickable as ever, but dear god, people, have we forgotten Hero? The video, where the song is inset with snatches off September 11th air traffic control, Bush's speeches, and so on?

[identity profile] blue-russian.livejournal.com 2006-06-08 12:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I remember the Enrique songs by the videos, and (shame shame shame) the only one that underwhelmed me was the duet he did with Alsou, breaking the hearts of everyone in Russia that she'd finally breakout in the West.

But my favorite of his comes a bit later.

Why so little love for DB Boulevard? Perfect summer dance-pop, with a fantastic singalong chorus and that great cardboard video.

Re: aaaaaaaah, ah-hah, yeah

[identity profile] bengraham.livejournal.com 2006-06-08 12:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree. Lasgo and DB Boulevard WERE the sounds of that summer.

Sum 41 need more love for "In Too Deep"! It's totally pop-tastic, has a fantastic video, & is screeds better than any song a US "could-be-yr-life" band released (Husker Du, in particular).

also: wtf w/so little love for "Oi!"?

Puretone. Great "wor-ee-or-ee-or" noises, great daft verse lyrics, great build up - to RUB UNSATISFYING CHORUS.

Although this song is better than eg Robbie & Nicole I cannot give it a tick.
