Back. Back! BACK!!! It's the Now poll, this time muscled into 1996 by an Oasis track on each arm. Now 32 was a second win for Pulp, closer this time though with Coolio and Shaggy trailing. Can Pulp make it 3 in a row? On paper this looks like a weak opposition but who knows which way the whim of Poptimists will wend?

I can't remember Gusto or Ken Doh either but ticked them on the basis that they're probably a bit ravey.

Louise goes "in walked - love! in walked - you! in walked something something something". bouncy pop fun as per.

Lush did good Britpop! but they did better shoegaze-lite, obv.

oh you and your Glazer hatred

the Gabrielle song is her best one. i had it in my head this morning, by coincidence.

i ticked the Dubstar tho can't quite remember it, naughty. well it's no 'St Swithuns Day' anyway.

didn't tick Bab Zoo. prefer 'Animal Army'!

I have the cd single with the mentalist "Dreadlock Holiday" mix on it.

From discogs:

"Technohead is Lee Newman and Michael Wells. Also known as Greater than one (GTO), Tricky disco, John and Julie, Signs of chaos, TD5, Church of XTC, etc..... Lee Newman and Michael Wells were married and escaped the English dance scene and moved to Amsterdam. They worked for different labels and magazines all over the world. Lee Newman died on the 4th of August 1995. She had a sever form of skin cancer. She never saw the golden record "I wanna be a hippy" on number one. They escaped England because Fashion and trends obsessed the music scene. The british drugs policy is to not look at it, so there were too many criminals. He studied Visual Communication and has doctorates in Clean Arts. (Royal college of arts). Michael believes Techno began in Germany, experimental music from the 60's and not from Detroit!"

THEORY: the past few Now albums have seen a lot of people saying things along the lines of "omg this one is so bad". Maybe it is not that the Now albums were bad per se, but pop in general was actually rather horrible around this time? (due entirely to sodding horrible vile britpop of course.)

I'm annoyed at the consensus for the first time ever (er, not counting Portishead, which I expected). I'd be much happier scratching Pulp and having St. Et - Luniz - Radiohead.

Surprised that there's reasonable support for Just as the best Radiohead - I picked it myself, but I thought the votes would be all over the place (or they'd go to Big Songs like Creep or Paranoid Android)

Also surprised that Martin hates all the singles - I know some people dismiss certain phases of the band, but that's usually from a perspective of overpreciousness about a different phase.

From: [identity profile] jauntyalan.livejournal.com
it is prob between st et and luniz for best song from the "Which is the best?" question. the ticky boxes are a consensus not to do with best, but LCD innit. disco 2000 is good enough to reach out, but it's far from pulp's best stuff (tho still fun). i.e. pulp is a dancefloor filler, but st et will get things started

An amazing NOW. The first and second batch aren't very good generally, but contain some of my fave singles of the decade (The Universal, I Got 5 On It). The third batch though... this is the first time I TICKED ALL OF THEM.

ALL. OF. THEM.
(That's because all of them are superb (St Et, Gat Decor), great (Dubstar, Technohead, Gusto), or at the very least, 'any good' (the rest).

Gat Decor

From: [identity profile] chezghost.livejournal.com
Am assuming the version of Gat Decor on here is the one with the vocals from Degrees Of Motion's 'Do You Want It Right Now?' rather than the original version sans vocals from '92.

Funnily enough, because both tracks involved in this house mash-up originally came out in '92 I recreated this mash-up for the Ultramix 92 mix, and it sounds much the same, although the D.O.M. acapella I found was not the best quality.

Of course The Source 'U Got The Love' still predates this as first chart mash-up.
