OK clear this up for me - is there a difference between bassline house and niche or are they two words to describe the same thing, like grime and eski in the old days?

Bassline, niche and 4x4 are the same thing. Bassline and 4x4 are kind of self-explanatory, and the club it first started to get big in Sheffield or Birmingham or whatever northern wilderness this comes from is called Niche.

the first massive grime tune was 'Eskimo' by Wiley - he's always called his music "eski" even when the entire rest of the world decided to call it "grime". Dunno where it comes from - I suspect it refers to the puffa jackets which all the kidz on the bus wear which have fake fur trim round the hood.

Why are people so bad at naming these subgenres? 'bassline' and '4x4' tell us nothing about what distinguishes it from other offshoots of Garage. Niche is really bizarre. The basslines aren't particularly powerful although they do have a memorable characteristic in spite of this I guess. On that basis I am going to call this music THRIBBLE, until I think of something more suitable tomorrow.

I do kinda like this tune but it's still not as good as Jaimeson's 'True', and the video is just rubbish!

Is anyone here friends with someone who has actually invented a genre name that has taken hold in the world? (The closest I know of is Chuck Eddy, who used the term "nerf metal" for Poison and White Lion and the like, and a few other people began using it too, but it didn't make it into common usage.)

Garage as 'derived from House' makes sense tho! I always thought of it that way at least. Garage Rock makes sense too really.
