Oooooo-oo-ooooo-oo! 'Baby Love' was the top of the ticks for 1964, Diana & co just beating the Kinks and Sandie Shaw. The Bachelors didn't get a single vote, and will slomp off home infront of the telly with a microwave meal for one. Between all of them! This week we bid adieu to Girl Power, welcome back Madge and ponder the ultimate question: what would one resemble with a 'chimney' bestowed upon one in the near future? It's 1998!

B*Witched, B*Witched, B*Witched. This is the BEST YEAR IN MUSICAL HISTORY.

Because B*Witched are the finest group ever made. They had everything- irish charm, twins, denim, annoyingly catchy tunes, dance routines with lots of jumping up and down. As a teenage boy, I sold my soul to them and it shall be theirs for ever more.

God I love them. I even have one of their dolls.

substitute B*Witched for the Spice Girls and I'm right there, down to the doll. Not the teenage part though.

3) I would probably do this at karaoke for a laugh

I HAVE done this.

I can't believe I forgot to tick this! It annoyed me at the time, but if it comes on the radio now I have to listen to it, there's something so ridiculous and ott about it that makes it fun.

All Saints v Spice Girls

A lead for ver Saints is surprising me! I think their stuff's aged much less well in general, maybe it's just that their look, attitude etc was so much more boring.

Plus individual Spice Girls have been very annoying in the media over the years, whereas All Saints' recent album was very good and no one cared so they get underdog status, whether they deserve it or not.

Also I hate the Spice Girls and B*Witched but that's a wholly different matter.

We are (almost) all indie here, Tom, admit it! Of course AS are in the lead!

Ladies, when did you stop wanting to be a Spice?

Yeah, what's going on there? I think their stuff's aged pretty badly, and not much of it was any good in the first place. They never looked like they were having any fun either.

Really?! In terms of production they both sound as dated as each other - I think the Spices were more consistent but All Saints had higher highs.

tolerating it

From: [identity profile] piratemoggy.livejournal.com
I really, really like that Manics song. I'd forgotten how much I liked it at the time until my dad had their Greatest Hits on in the car the other day and it is still quite wonderful.

Cornershop has been disappointing after the bombshell of discovering it was 'Brimful of Asha on the 45' and not 'Grim prune basher on the 45' which is obviously a lot better.

Another Level made me uncomfortable aged 11 and still makes me uncomfortable now -it would have made me cringe if Billie had done it, too (apparently according to some pop music publication I read at the time she was interested in doing it when it came up because it would have been interesting to see a woman perform it, personally I think it would have still been gross but at least she is more attractive than Another Level were I suppose) cus the lyrics are just minging. It's like watching bad, generic pr0n -there's nothing titillatory about it, it's just slightly morbidly fascinating. It's like 50 Cent- creepy sex, not at all sensual. Mind you, I like Marilyn Manson so probably can't talk.

Divergence between Briton and America

From: [identity profile] justfanoe.livejournal.com
Only two of these were also number ones in America, "My Heart Will Go On" and "Believe". Actually, very few of these were hits in America as well. I can't be bothered to check for sure, but the only other ones that strike me as having been hits in the USA are "You Make Me Wanna", "Frozen", "Goodbye", and "C'est La Vie". B*Witched are one hit wonders in the USA, Spice Girls were huge, many of these were 0 hit wonders (All Saints, Billie, etc.)

Did All Saints really not chart at all in the US? Somehow I thought both Under the Bridge and Pure Shores were definitely transatlantic hits

Wasn't Gym & Tonic an exact copy of another record going around, one with an actual Jane Fonda sample rather than something pretending to be one? Or have I made that up?

I seem to remember Bob Sinclar had something to do with the proper version.

I can't listen to Believe. Firstly for using autotune on the vocals as an effect and inspiring lots of copycats, and secondly it was played to death in one episode of Buffy, where it was used for its irritating qualities. Buffy's roommate says "This song is super fun. Isn't it?" as she goes to put it on the stereo one more time. Still, she turns out to be a demon and almost dies a horrible death, so everything is OK in the end.

Oh, can I tell the story of the reason why I like 'No matter what' by Boyzone? I once heard them being interviewed on Danish radio and for some reason the presenter decided to encourage listeners to phone in and sing along with 'No matter what' during the programme. Of course it sounded DREADFUL; nobody could keep in time with the music, they wandered wildly off-key and so forth, and bless their polite hearts, Boyzone kept saying "Well, it's a difficult thing to do, well done there!" to all these chancers murdering their song. It was marvellous!

The previous year's Barbie Girl irritated the hell out of me but I love both of these two. Dr Jones was really fun and then Turn Back Time was a big surprise. It would appear I'm in a minority opinion on that here though.

Shouldn't we be clear that it was the funky Fatboy Slim remix of 'Brimful of Asha' which hit the top? He's dreadful, the original song was pretty dull - but together, they somehow worked.

I think the non-Fatboy original is infintely superior, which is why I didn't tick the one above (which I presume is the Fatboy Slim version).

Is Deeper Underground the only Jamiroquai record which is the slightest but good?

Aside from that remix of Space Cowboy, anyway.
