Last time on the #1 polls, 2002 saw the battle of the girlbands, with Sugababes narrowly pipping Gels Alahd to the post, with Freak Like Me getting a massive 41 ticks. Now dudes, its time to rewind twenty years - oh man, I've been looking forward to this year for ages. Boyband FITES! Yazoo covers getting the wobs top spot! Dave Bow-tie rescuing his career! Put your hands up for 1983!

[Poll #977180]

Argh sorry dudes, managed to post this twice. Re-tick pls!

Nearly ticked 'Every Breath You Take' but prefer Puff and Faith's version so no.

Please tell me that 'You Can't Hurry Love' is not P Collins desecrating the Supremes.

No, it's really not bad at all, Lex. Quite faithful to the Motown sound.

Mind you, I liked Phil Collins anyway at this point in time. His first two solo albums are - genuinely - GREAT and GOOD respectively. He went downhill after that, though.

I think the idea of P Collins being faithful to the Motown sound is actually even more repellent...

Have you actually heard it? It's quite good you know.

I ticked it bcs it is one of the first 3 songs that I ever remember hearing and singing along to, and I didn't KNOW what a cvnt P Collins was at the time (being only 6).

Yes, best song here - even better than Billie Jean. I'm sure Kat would recognise it if she heard it.

I may post mp3 tomorrow!

The New Edition one is awesome, and it's the basis of Trina and Lil' Brianna's equally fantastic 'Kandi' as a bonus.

The KC one is a great lost hit (also I think it was w/o Sunshine Band, at least I remember that being the talk).

Who/what are teh Flying Pickets?

A bunch of blokes with beards singing a capella. It starts with them making strange yelping noises, IIRC.

It's used to devastating effect at the climax of Wong Kar-wai's Fallen Angels. It's faintly ridiculous, but I love it.

The main one ended up in Coronation Street eventually. I forget as who though. He looked like a binman, but then they all did, and I think that was partly the point.

This is a weird year cos it's obviously not vintage but at the same time I ticked all but one track - a lot of OK, quite good, six-out-of-ten tracks kicking around that I couldn't NOT tick (Paul Young probably most marginal but I quite like it even so). This is mostly because I was 10, I guess.

I was going to say something very similar - v. solid year, it seems to me.

Yeah, ditto. I ticked all of 'em bar:

Paul Young (song & arrangement OK, but hate his voice in general)
Rod Stewart (can't remember this one, but no doubt rub) and
Duran Duran (not bad, but my least favourite of theirs - there's something irritating about the way Le Bon sings "please please tell me now")

Rod

This came off the same album as "Young Turks" - his version of new wave/power pop. Totally tickable if you can shed your anti-disco-Rod preconceptions. I remember two or three of his singles around then being a totally guilty pleasure for me, because "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy" was still totally the defining song for him.

I wish "Young Turks" had been a #1! Hurrah for Disco Rod!

I ticked every one I remembered, and even one I didn't (KC). I was totally baffled by "Candy Girl" (I now remember that it existed, but I can't remember it), since I read "New Edition" as "New Order."

I remember Rob Sheffield had a piece in Spin saying why New Kids On The Block were the new Rolling Stones, giving relevant comparisons, e.g., "Rolling Stones: The blues had a baby and they called it rock 'n' roll. New Kids On The Block: Maurice Starr had New Edition and they sued him."

Interesting fact about New Edition: Madonna was a supporting act on one of their tours.

I picked 13, that's the most ever for me. 1983 was a good year, I was 7.
