Great rejoicing at Lex Towers as Aaliyah finally wins a Now poll - she's in it again, as are a few other former winners, as are the Sugababes, and Scooter, Ms Dynamite, Nelly and...Idlewild. Summer 2002 - it was really hot, there was some terrific pop in the charts and a World Cup was on. How times change...

[Poll #746498]

TICKNO TICKNO TICKNO TICKNO!

This will be the LAST Now poll for over TWO WEEKS as I'm on holiday from Wednesday, so enjoy it while you can. The final 12 volumes in the series will occupy us nicely during July and August I'm sure.

'No More Drama' is HEART-RENDING - exactly the same themes as 'Family Affair', I think these two may be one of the greatest one-two back-to-back singles ever for a) making a Grand Statement about the artist and how she is Back, Bitches, with one banger and one ballad; b) extrapolating that into a Grand Statement about LIFE which is true and moving and uplifting and life-affirming and joyous; c) GREAT TUNES, too.

I didn't tick Sugababes because...

Not only is it one of the finest, most beautiful slow jams ever, but it also birthed:

1) Kiley Dean's 'Make Me A Song' aka the most meta pop song ever. The chorus is Kiley singing to Timbaland:

Can you make me a song like 'Rock The Boat', 'Rock The Boat', 'Rock The Boat'?
Can you give me a song that you and Missy wrote, Missy wrote, Missy wrote?
Something like 'Get Ur Freak On'
Cos Kiley needs something to sing on

It also breaks the entire concept of meta because Timbaland had NOTHING TO DO with 'Rock The Boat' in the first place!

2) Teedra Moses's entire career - when I interviewed her she said that this song above all others inspired the sonic make-up of her solo work, that kind of lazy clarity framing each word like it's a new revelation.

Ever since this song, whenever ANYONE has said "it's hot in here" which used to be a PERFECTLY INNOCUOUS phrase - ever since this song, every time I have heard that without fail, I am ALWAYS seized with the desire to respond "so take off all your clothes", and sometimes I actually do this, and sometimes it is NOT APPROPRIATE!
