Great rejoicing at Lex Towers as Aaliyah finally wins a Now poll - she's in it again, as are a few other former winners, as are the Sugababes, and Scooter, Ms Dynamite, Nelly and...Idlewild. Summer 2002 - it was really hot, there was some terrific pop in the charts and a World Cup was on. How times change...

[Poll #746498]

TICKNO TICKNO TICKNO TICKNO!

This will be the LAST Now poll for over TWO WEEKS as I'm on holiday from Wednesday, so enjoy it while you can. The final 12 volumes in the series will occupy us nicely during July and August I'm sure.

'No More Drama' is HEART-RENDING - exactly the same themes as 'Family Affair', I think these two may be one of the greatest one-two back-to-back singles ever for a) making a Grand Statement about the artist and how she is Back, Bitches, with one banger and one ballad; b) extrapolating that into a Grand Statement about LIFE which is true and moving and uplifting and life-affirming and joyous; c) GREAT TUNES, too.

Amy Studt: Spice Girls impressario has a go at "4REAL" music. Beloved by me, a couple of Stylus writers, and nobody else. Italia Conte Avril, basically.

Studt as I remember was a girl from Southampton or similar who was a British ie crap version of Avril L - has Avril been missed out then?

I mean, REALLY crap, and she wore some dreadful clothes in the video.

Crap! It's like Sheryl Crow covering the Pixies or something.

You not ticking Sugababes = blatant lie for sake of contrarianism!

Yes but you didn't tick Mary J.

I didn't tick Sugababes because...

(it's not as good as you remember it. seriously. go back and listen to it now. "hole in the head" blows it out of the water)

Exactly, crap! (Both S Crow and Pixies are OK-ish in their respective ways but neither are really suited to encroaching on what the other do)

'Rock The Boat'

Again this is bollocks for the sake of contrarianism! I don't think 'Freak Like Me' is the best Sugababes song either but to argue that it is NOT GOOD AT ALL is nonsense.

Excert from Dom Passantino's history of #1 singles of the 00s on Stylus:

"This was revolutionary back then (or at least different), but being impressed by this song now is like being impressed by the graphics for Virtua Racer on the Sega Saturn."

It wasn't particularly 'revolutionary' or 'impressive' back then! The actual bootleg had been around for ages and the whole er 'phenomenon' was entering its final stages to be honest. But it was still - then and now - just, y'know, a really really good pop song. And it hasn't dated, I don't think, either.
