Great rejoicing at Lex Towers as Aaliyah finally wins a Now poll - she's in it again, as are a few other former winners, as are the Sugababes, and Scooter, Ms Dynamite, Nelly and...Idlewild. Summer 2002 - it was really hot, there was some terrific pop in the charts and a World Cup was on. How times change...

[Poll #746498]

TICKNO TICKNO TICKNO TICKNO!

This will be the LAST Now poll for over TWO WEEKS as I'm on holiday from Wednesday, so enjoy it while you can. The final 12 volumes in the series will occupy us nicely during July and August I'm sure.

Amy Studt: Spice Girls impressario has a go at "4REAL" music. Beloved by me, a couple of Stylus writers, and nobody else. Italia Conte Avril, basically.

You not ticking Sugababes = blatant lie for sake of contrarianism!

Studt as I remember was a girl from Southampton or similar who was a British ie crap version of Avril L - has Avril been missed out then?

I mean, REALLY crap, and she wore some dreadful clothes in the video.

Crap! It's like Sheryl Crow covering the Pixies or something.

Exactly, crap! (Both S Crow and Pixies are OK-ish in their respective ways but neither are really suited to encroaching on what the other do)

Studt lived in Bournemouth, I know because SHE WAS MY SISTER'S BEST MATE aged 11 - 15 and was round out house all the time. I have some v bad photos of her looking badly young somewhere. She went to posh Bryanston school, hotbed of drugs, and now has a flat of her own. She's still writing music and is planning a comeback/relaunch. And I should say now that yes, her music was pants, and I in no way endorse her, but still, claim to fame and all that.

I think she was about 15 when she recorded the videos, but anyway, have photos of her aged 12, looking a bit... bad. She had plastic surgery to pin her ears back: TRU FACT!

Giant Leap is horrible trip hop with Maxi Jazz AND Robbie Williams!

It was 1 Giant Leap (rather than 'Giant Leap') and it was the project by Jamie Catto (ex-Faithless) and some guy called Duncan Bridgeman.

Wikipedia entry here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1_Giant_Leap) contains more info.

The song that appears on this Now was, as Kat rightly points out "horrible trip hop with Maxi Jazz AND Robbie Williams" but some of the other stuff on the album was absolute genius, particularly a beautiful duet between Michael Stipe and Asha Bhosle, a great tune with Neneh Cherry and Speech (from Arrested Development) and a fantastic Michael Franti tune.

I have the DVD of it... got it as a freebie cos I was doing work experience at the eNeMyE the week it was released.

Yeah, I know. First time I heard it, my finger was hovering over the 'skip' button, but there's something about Asha Bhosle's voice that seemed to bring out the best in Stipey. It's a very weird song can't remember much more about it except that vocally, one of the best performances I ever heard, from both artists.
