The History of Pop Part 44 aka So you're a rocket scientist?

The big news on Now 44 is the first appearance of Britney, on a highly pop-centric compilation. Beyond that we have a host of solo Spice singles, Steps, Shania, S Club and a great deal of pop-trance. I would write more but I'm a bit busy - anyway it's an intriguing selection and I'll look forward to seeing what you make of it.

Now 43 was clinched by the Chemical Brothers, leading Basement Jaxx by two votes and "Coffee And TV" by five.

Britney, Shania, Steps, Vengas, S-club all solid gold classics, loads of boshing euro-house, one-offs from Sixpence none the richer and Bran Van 3000, what's not to like? Even Texas pull it off!

[identity profile] jeff-worrell.livejournal.com 2006-05-15 01:25 pm (UTC)(link)
When oh when are we going to get a Robbie-related bonus Qn? hmmm?

The first batch is pretty good all round (if you overlook Texas).

Can't remember the Tin Tin Out & Emma one. What was that like?

[identity profile] juror8.livejournal.com 2006-05-15 01:27 pm (UTC)(link)
At one point it was GROOVE ARMADA VS BASEMENT JAXX for the hearts of the British pop public. What went wrong?

Bonus Question pt 2: Best vocal sample on "Drinking In LA"

[identity profile] juror8.livejournal.com 2006-05-15 01:28 pm (UTC)(link)
"Yeah, by the first count I reckon" just ahead of "Hi, I'm Stereo Mike!" for me.

Actually, no, it's "a form of roquefort".

a two-night stand I always assumed (without ever doing anything as rockist as paying attention to the lyrics other than "two times, two times")

two long times

[identity profile] blue-russian.livejournal.com 2006-05-15 02:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Fear not. Although they pale in this company.

[identity profile] jauntyalan.livejournal.com 2006-05-15 01:37 pm (UTC)(link)
backstreet boys were amazing weren't they. i never noticed at the time.

[identity profile] juror8.livejournal.com 2006-05-15 01:40 pm (UTC)(link)
It's weird, at the time I thought N'Sync were better, but looking back BSB absolutely destroy N'Sync's entire back catalogue.

[identity profile] alexmacpherson.livejournal.com 2006-05-15 01:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Let's talk about how amazing Moloko are!

They were one of my favourite obscure trip-hop acts in the 90s, and then suddenly BANG they went PROPER POP and FAMOUS and EVEN BETTER! 'Sing It Back' prob the third best after Brit and BSB here, but 'The Time Is Now' would flatten all comers.

I love Róisín so much.

I LIKE this Now. I like it a lot. But I do feel that there is no merit to anything that ponce Jay Kay has ever done in his career. But still, YAY for Britney, Eiffel 65, Bran Van, Supergrass, S Club, and ATB.

[identity profile] bengraham.livejournal.com 2006-05-15 01:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Also, the only decent track I ever recorded under the moniker of "DJ Devine" sampled the bassline from 'Sing It Back' and some vocals from a Bran Van 3000 song that WASN'T 'Drinking In LA'. I'll try and dig it up and post it on here some time. It literally was the only listenable track I ever recorded!

[identity profile] cis.livejournal.com 2006-05-15 01:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I own this Now and am listening to it as I type! 'Sway' is actually 100x more brilliant than I remembered.

Weirdly, I kind of I hope we don't get 100% consensus on britney, despite loving the song and having ticked it. It's just... 100% feels really oppressive, you know?

Shit, I ticked Texas. That was a mistake. I think.

[identity profile] chezghost.livejournal.com 2006-05-15 02:25 pm (UTC)(link)
that's OK, i feel like maybe i should've ticked it but didn't. i am torn on it. i had no qualms about ticking 'Black Eyed Boy' at all but 'Summer Son' is more difficult - some nice bits (handclap bridge, the bells) but it's all a bit too gloomy innit.

My joy at this volume was such

[identity profile] blue-russian.livejournal.com 2006-05-15 02:46 pm (UTC)(link)
that even the chorus to "You'll B in my <3" came back to me instantly and I wondered whether I should vote for it.

I worry that by refusing to vote for songs I haven't heard I am skewing the results. (But this and next might be a highwater for songs I have heard; afterwards, you decide you need to invent your own good reality TV pop and take your soil back from the Swedish invaders!)

[identity profile] anthonyeaston.livejournal.com 2006-05-15 03:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Speaking of Andrew's Swahilli comment, i wonder if i would like shania a lot more if she didnt pretend to be country, and if that makes me a countryist

Lolly

[identity profile] jel-bugle.livejournal.com 2006-05-15 04:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I voted for Lolly coz she presents quiz night live like every single night on FTN. I'm pretty sure it's her.
