The big news on Now 44 is the first appearance of Britney, on a highly pop-centric compilation. Beyond that we have a host of solo Spice singles, Steps, Shania, S Club and a great deal of pop-trance. I would write more but I'm a bit busy - anyway it's an intriguing selection and I'll look forward to seeing what you make of it.

Now 43 was clinched by the Chemical Brothers, leading Basement Jaxx by two votes and "Coffee And TV" by five.

Let's talk about how amazing Moloko are!

They were one of my favourite obscure trip-hop acts in the 90s, and then suddenly BANG they went PROPER POP and FAMOUS and EVEN BETTER! 'Sing It Back' prob the third best after Brit and BSB here, but 'The Time Is Now' would flatten all comers.

I love Róisín so much.

it's called 'Indigo', inexplicably.

'Familiar Feelings' is probably the best Moloko song. also 'Caught In A Whisper' (album track). oh and 'Forever More'...

still like 'Fun For Me' tho...the music is a lot like the music from Dr Dre's 'Dre Day', well the Moogy bassline at least. which probably came from George Clinton innit.

They did! That was called 'Indigo'. It is great, yes! And mental.

I'm really surprised you hate Moloko, I would've thought their nuttiness would appeal to you. And if not that then surely 'The Time Is Now' as a one-off PERFECT SUMMER HIT.

I have the impression that I shared a lot of your prejudices, Tom, and I came around pretty enthusiastically (although I did like their first album when it came out).

'Pure Pleasure Seeker' would also find favour with you I think, also 'Forever More' off their last album.

i'm inclined to venture the suggestion that Roisin's solo album is better than any prev. Moloko works.

I was thinking about this, too, when we started talking about Roisin, but I'm not convinced. I quite enjoy Ruby Blue but I lost active interest relatively quickly. 'Statues' I still go back to pretty regularly.

Interestingly enough, Roisin is a very rare example of someone who I saw live (and without knowing most of the songs) and a) was impressed enough to buy the album right away and b) preferred the live show to the album.

Almost agreed on both points (I knew the songs before seeing her live but I preferred them live, which is VERY rare for me)

I can never decide whether I like Things To Make And Do or Statues more - the latter is more coherent, one exquisite sound perfected and refined, whereas the former is more scattershot and inevitably results in higher highs, but more need to use the skip button.

That said 'Forever More' is a fucking massive high, and there aren't any actively horrid songs on TTMAD.
