I sort of expected S Club, even though it is rubbish but THE STROKES, PEOPLE? Even indie people hate the Strokes!

To be fair, I did like one song off ...their third one, maybe? That one where they stopped sounding anything like the Strokes.

Edit: ah, it was 'Heart In A Cage' -NOT THAT THIS EXCUSES ANYONE.

Okay, I'm too young to really remember punk the first time around, but didn't it used to possess, I dunno, exuberance? The guitar pummels along pacily enough but that vocal sounds phoned in. Literally phoned in, with all the distortion.

I really don't remember that many people being into them even at the time (and I hung out with lots of indie students that year!) - iirc the White Stripes and YYYs were emerging around the same time and both were such an obviously better take on that lo-fi garagey template that the Strokes really did seem totally dull in comparison even if you were predisposed to that aesthetic. The Strokes seemed much more of a fashion mag type of band.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs were a bit later. White Stripes and Strokes both made their UK live debuts at the (now defunct) Point venue in Oxford in the spring of 2001 IIRC. I had tickets for both gigs and went to neither.

Strokes are ok, I suppose, and I speak as an indie fan. But 'Hard To Explain' is one of their weaker singles, can't see why it's getting so much love.
