I really don't remember that many people being into them even at the time (and I hung out with lots of indie students that year!) - iirc the White Stripes and YYYs were emerging around the same time and both were such an obviously better take on that lo-fi garagey template that the Strokes really did seem totally dull in comparison even if you were predisposed to that aesthetic. The Strokes seemed much more of a fashion mag type of band.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs were a bit later. White Stripes and Strokes both made their UK live debuts at the (now defunct) Point venue in Oxford in the spring of 2001 IIRC. I had tickets for both gigs and went to neither.

Strokes are ok, I suppose, and I speak as an indie fan. But 'Hard To Explain' is one of their weaker singles, can't see why it's getting so much love.
