Heat #3 was even closer than Heat #2! Kelis gets two more songs through with the help of ODB; the rest of the Wu Tang Clan join Spiller & Sophie E-B in the final. But it's a six-way stalemate for 5th place! Look for the tie-breaker at the end of this poll...

  • You get a maximum of TEN TICKS over the three bits of the poll. The top five will go through to the next stage.

  • If you want to change your vote (or tick too many by mistake), you can edit your votes by clicking on 'Poll #12345' then 'Fill Out Poll'.

  • UK chart placings given in brackets.

  • You have until Friday lunchtime to vote.

  • Rep for your favourites in the comments!

This is the first heat where I've ticked 10.

Anyone not ticking Sonique is clearly WRONG.

I thought about that, since I only ticked four and one of them was b0n j0v1 but honestly I think I dislike that song. :(

When I went back to Sonique it was SO MUCH BETTER than I'd remembered! At the time I thought it was OK but it really is glorious.

She was diagnosed w/breast cancer this week :(

People not ticking Hot Boyz are wrong.

Slim pickings for me here but feel need to rep for Deltron-

one of those 'played it till it broke' ones.

KIRSTY KIRSTY KIRSTY!!!

the kirsty song is excellent latin pop, with ace lyrics:

(non-vid)

it is BETTER THAN RADIOHEAD, that's all i'm saying...

Is there anything in this or any other heat that ISN'T "better than Radiohead"!

The fact that 'Idioteque' actually has a half-decent beat (only half: why bother with Radiohead's idea of 2-step when there's ACTUAL 2-step to tick) is totally negated by the very worst, whiniest vocal I've ever heard from Thom Yorke, which is quite something given that his default is an awful whine.

FAO: PEOPLE NOT TICKING HOT BOYZ (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4LcXL0rO5zk)

In the top 13 songs ever.
From: [identity profile] alexmacpherson.livejournal.com
It's a fantastic track but I didn't tick 'Hot Boyz' because it's just so 1999 to me that it feels wrong sending it through...it was the last single off a 1999 album, the footnote of the album campaign which just happened to be in 2000.

Ditto 'Hip Hop', originally released in MARCH 1999. We won't have this issue in future heats but neither of those tracks are really part of the decade we're polling.

I like 'How Many Licks?' better than any of them anyway.

First heat that I couldn't tick 10 off the bat...got two spare ticks if anyone feels like pimping songs out. Intend to check out the Alecia Elliott for sure, and will go back to Kirsty MacColl/Mandy Moore/Phoenix/Modjo which I remember hearing & liking at the time but not to the extent that I cared about them particularly.

Cheerleading LIL' KIM in he tiebreaker! Even if I didn't have reservations about the release dates of the Missy and Dead Prez, it's still my favourite by some way, and we have to send SOME ho-rap through...

Talking of ho-rap, I encourage everyone to tick Trina's 'I Need' here. The internet is not providing so here it is (http://www.sendspace.com/file/ky322b). I love those shiny turn-of-the-century Slip'n'Slide hip-house beats and her first verse is AMAZING:

Nigga, I'm a first class ho, money in the stash hoe
Fast ho, love it when you lick tha asshole
And if you wanna pass go
I need 20 grand or better
Real go-getter out for the flo' getter

Love it when it goes into that "I FUCK!" "YOU FUCK!" call-and-response too.

This is also the first heat where I actively hate a lot of the nominees...Radiohead, as ever, need to fuck off and die, BOREDS of Canada more like, how the hell did Primal Scream even get nominated are you SERIOUS, and the Kid606 title alone makes me break out in hives.

Date: 2009-06-16 12:08 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] alexmacpherson.livejournal.com
Ayyyy! Primal Scream with the same number of ticks as Jay-Z (which I assumed would be way out in front due to it being an all-timer) and Sonique (ditto), and no one else ticking Kristine Blonde?????? Ayyyyyy Poptimists don't do this to me.

Three of my no-hoper nominees in this round:

Slimm Calhoun - "It's OK" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8-t8nnA9yrM): bouncy Atlanta pop-hop ft Andre 3000, big record for me in summer 00

Goran Bregovic plays "Kalashnikov" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wkkNS-6beoU) at Eurovision 2008!

The Ark - "It Takes A Fool To Remain Sane" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GNay6BNhpDA): hyper-intense Swedish glam-pop: this is what Mika thinks he's doing.

i like The Ark EXCEPT for the bit "and if you think i'm corny then it will not stop me/it's your right to laugh at meeee" which is awful (but amusingly so). i like to pretend it's Bowie (as usual).

I had the occasion to listen to some Boards Of Canada (incl this song) for a project for Another Prominent Website and GOOD GRIEF they've aged poorly. I guess the price of influence is to sound horribly lumbering and obvious now.

St Etienne over Missy/Toni/KIM?! :(

I mean, I like St Et, but just have no idea how this one goes, and that's after listening to it last week to remind myself!

I'm surprised at how poorly Phoenix are faring. Not that I need this to be particularly rectified (don't hate it but as long as Kristine Blond languishes on one tick, nothing else needs to be repped for).

Wow, Kirsty MacColl starts awesome and keeps getting better. "Love Shy" starts awesome and stays awesome. I really can't bring myself to de-tick any of the other ones, though I suppose, weirdly, that *NSync is closest to being unticked (this will not happen, though).

Must rep for some AMERICAN COUNTRY MUSIC, specifically Alecia Elliott's "I'm Diggin' It." It's pop, y'all!!!!

No embedding (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lBlDlodGkck), but be sure to stick around for the weird c. 2000 TV fast-forward including brief snippet of "Oops" era Britney!

They had damn near everything this time! The gaps:

Stereolab - I Feel The Air (of another planet)
Future Bible Heroes - I'm Lonely (And I Love It)
Boards of Canada - In A Beautiful Place Out In The Country
Kristine Blonde - Love Shy (28) (there's a remix avialable but I didn't put it on the list)
SheDaisy - Lucky 4 You (Tonight I'm Just Me)
Kid 606 - Luke Vibert Can Kiss My Indie Punk Whiteboy Ass
Deltron 3030 - Madness

I also couldn't find the original "Zombie Nation - Kernkraft 400 (2)" but found a mass-produced cover from an exercise album instead. If this greatly offends someone I'll take that down :).

Livin' together alone

Best song I'd not heard before: Sonique "It Feels So Good" (currently hanging onto fifth place by the skin of its teeth). Simultaneously austere and voluptuous.

Song that I ticked that Lex might like even less than Radiohead: "Kryptonite." Sorta sounds like the Nickelback guy with pants that aren't quite as tight but with more of a whine. I sometimes like whine.

Cliffhanger: "I Need" is only 7 votes out of fifth place.

Surmise: My suspicion is that many poptimists are not using this competition as a chance to explore country music.

Hilarity: SHeDAISY's "Lucky 4 You" barely squeaked onto my tick list (edging out Beanie Sigel) but is quite funny so you should make an effort to listen.

More hilarity: Martina McBride's "Love's The Only House" is even funnier than "Lucky 4 You" and it's not trying to be ("And we got teenagers walkin' around in a culture o' darkness livin' together alone"). It's a better song too, a big-hearted shouter that manages to be haunting as well, like if Springsteen had ever managed to untangle his muscles. (The link is the only one I could find with the original video; if Yahoo won't let Brits play it, scroll up a few posts to where Greg's embedded the tune.)

Oh wow, even if I was cheerleading Kim I'm thrilled that Toni's gonna go through - when voting opened in that heat she languished on just a couple of ticks for ages.
