you could replace 'soul' with 'rock' there and it'd still make sense, and at least soul is the FOUNDATION

Soul is way more po-faced about what is and isn't (or rather has and hasn't) soul than rock is! Admittedly this means viewing the rock-laughing-at-rock (hair metal, for example) as inside rather than outside rock, but at least it has a laughing-at-itself genre!

Rock has direct links to pop-rock which is pop! And also rock! It's right there in the name!
