Dude, it will TOTALLY win.

that would be lame and awful and wrong though! I retain a tiny tiny bit of faith in poptimist tastes and this would wipe it away completely :(

I mean it's the simplest one yet - mostly shitty genre vs mostly amazing genre, no brainer.

Well it depends what you're talking about surely? I think 'rock' can just mean so many different things as opposed to the more specific (but still broad) soul that it's just more likely to win based on that fact alone.

Soul has direct links to r&b which IS pop!
From: [identity profile] alexmacpherson.livejournal.com
whatever "two-tone" is it CANNOT be better than 2-step which is basically the pinnacle of british culture.

soul is mainly used to beat R&B over the head for not being soul :(

currently you can map 16 and 23 exactly onto one another -- canada is SAFE BY SCIENCE

you could replace 'soul' with 'rock' there and it'd still make sense, and at least soul is the FOUNDATION

I hesitated over ticking CAN because I know there's a whole load of really terrible handwringing indie which comes from there - in the end I ticked it mostly because of kd lang and Avril. and because beyond les Minogues, who I don't think are amazing anyway, AUS has 0 to recommend it.

Soul is way more po-faced about what is and isn't (or rather has and hasn't) soul than rock is! Admittedly this means viewing the rock-laughing-at-rock (hair metal, for example) as inside rather than outside rock, but at least it has a laughing-at-itself genre!

Brown
- I think Brown just had the bigger/wider impact, and better dancing perhaps...altho 'Who's Zooming Who' beats 'Living In America' heh

Live Albums
- because the recent Daft Punk, Kraftwerk and Knife live CDs are big faves and I don't think I've been loving any particular remix CDs in that same time. also remix albums are pure convenience whereas live albums typically give you something you can't collect another way (apart from dodgy bootlegs)

Drum solo
- not sure, just felt right

Australia
- see bands list above - not actually that convincing but i can't think of that many from Canada i like either

Road To Nowhere
- i think Autobahn is quite a dull Kraftwerk track, important as it is.

FFWD
- i has ADD, next please...

1970s
- Quantick OTM

2-Step
- I love Two Tone too. Outling my personal reasons for liking 2-Step is tricky but could be coaxed as we go

Soul
- not really worth going into

Girl Power
- mainly because i don't know much RG stuff/it passed me by, whereas GP was far less avoidable as A Thing (for better or worse)

"Safe"
- I am so sick of the word 'bland'/it's frequent mis-use and never want to read it again. Blanned more like.

Passion
- not so into throwaway thrills

No no no no no why are you voting for Girl Power dear god. :(

Hurrah for bass solo winning however I have just remember that this puts the great nemesis Muse in a position of approval. :( I was thinking more Death From Above 1979 at the time of ticking.

The 70s were lame. Dear ghod. Also live albumens >>> remix CDs, but only where the band are any good and actually a) don't use so many backing trax that the album is indistuishable from the orig CD, and b) do something different with the material.
From: [identity profile] alexmacpherson.livejournal.com
who cares about 1979?? no one was alive then. as you yourself say the 70s were lame.

The toughies were def Live vs Remix (Live albums are horrible in pop, but most the amazing improv and jazz is recorded in a live setting), Guitar vs Organ (a few great gtr players able to sustain solo recordings but organ has Messiaen's wacked out imagination).

Easiest ws voting for 2-step, 70s, Girl Power (Riot grrrl has yet to find its way to my ears).

Surprised that Fashion is being trounced by Passion!

Went for bland, but its an interesting coupling.

Soul: Good Genre, Terrible Sensibility

Date: 2008-03-08 10:22 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] skyecaptain.livejournal.com
Rock versus soul, sensibility versus genre:

I dunno which I would choose genre-wise, since I dislike very little soul but also love-beyond-reason more rock than soul (even if I also hate a lot of rock), but the orientation toward "having soul" is one of the ugliest authenticity debates in music writing! The "soul sensibility" ("that is so soulful," "that is the real soul") is one of the stodgiest of all, whereas at least one could argue that the "rock sensibility" has long ago moved away from most of rock-the-genre. That is to say the idea of "being soul" is directly responsible for Lex's Winehouse-dilution rant!
