A question for you Poptimists this fine December morn.

Who is the ultimate Xmas artist?

I imagine many of you will immediately think of Westlife or Slade. But I have a name for you, and that name is Dina Carroll. Remember her? You never EVER hear her music during the year. But come Xmas-time, suddenly she's everywhere. I've heard 'The Perfect Year' twice in 48 hours - once on The Hits TV, and then this morning in the West One Shopping Centre at Bond St tube.

Any other artists you can think of who make a reappearance for a month each December and then vanish for 11 months?

Cliff was the one I immediately thought of as well!

Indeed! Judging by Hits!TV's current output I'd say:

- Cliff
- East 17
- The Pogues
- The Cheeky Girls

I had forgotten all about Dina Carroll! I haven't heard her this year and I don't really associate her with Xmas but I loved her back in the day.

Seriously if anyone has an mp3 of 'Don't Be A Stranger' PLEASE SEND IT TO ME! Thanks.

I guess I think of Slade anyway. I hate Xmas. I hate Slade. Hate.

I used to be such a Dina Carroll fanboy. Oddly enough, I had a strange urge to search for 'Without Love' on YouTube the other day.

Is Jona Lewie too obvious?

Although he's usually around for about a week, with a few appearances as a talking head on repeats of Top 100 Christmas Songs programmes.

He could be dead for all I know.

But you'll always find him in the kitchen at parties...

(Presumably not just xmas parties, either)

Jona is a good answer. You never hear his other hit.

Although Bing Crosby has to be the ultimate wobs artist. He did so many great Christmas songs, but I don't think I can name another song he did (other than things from movies).

Cliff, check.
Jona Lewis, check.
Wham increasingly so (or at least there will come a time)
The real winners = The Pogues & Kirsty McColl!

Nah, you hear plenty of Kirsty throughout the year. "A New England" and "There's A Guy Works Down the Chip Shop" = radio canon!

Actually, the Korrekt ans. = The Waitresses!

I think the Pogues is a good answer actually - Shane McG is independently famous for being a trainwreck but which other Pogues songs do you ever hear?

There will come a time for Wham, but not for a while. If we assume the younger limit for nostalgia is 7, and the upper limit for dancing like an fool at an office party is 45 (there are both very conservative assumptions), then Wake Me Up Before You Go Go has 14 years left in it.

Hmm. So "Careless Whisper" isn't part of the A/C radio canon in the UK the way it is in the US, then? (I'm really asking, this isn't rhetorical.) Coz here, I think Wham! may still be better-known for "Whisper" than "Christmas."
