A specially mixed bag on this category which attempted to replace last year's unsatisfactory genre of the year. This mix of new genres, dubious developments and personal pleasures does a little better though!
[Poll #1105475]
Tomorrow: MOST HORRIBLE THING and LIVE ACT unless I change my mind. All polls are still open, check the link on the dance to poll.
Click below the cut for explanations in haiku form of what these are!
Balearic:
Swooshy synth noises
And a mellow soft rock vibe
Back to eighty-seven
Bassline:
It came from the North
Two-step, divas, wub-wub bass
Real men call it Niche.
Dancing with an umbrella:
Watch what you're doing
Pretending you're Rihanna
You'll have my eye out!
Disco Re-Edits:
Money for old rope?
No! Appreciate the skill!
Frankie Valli did.
Emo:
"Pete Wentz is teh hott"
The kids on the Myspace say
Like I'd really know.
Indie getting less rockish?
Klaxons won a prize
With clumsy rave Frankenstein
What next? Afropop?
Minimal:
The sound of Berlin
I read as much in the Graun.
Bip bip bip bip bip.
Pop stars going nuts
Britney in a wig
Amy living it far too big
Throw them in the brig!

Date: 2007-12-13 03:16 pm (UTC)Objection!
Date: 2007-12-13 03:23 pm (UTC)Bloc Party: last single was based around a bibbly trance synth (boring vocal melody but at least they are making an effort!)
Maccabees: new song = back to their best (phew!) and is very sweet pop without being kitchen sink-y
Klaxons: well I've gabbed on about this interminably - right idea, poor execution.
HOWEVER there is still much work to be done. I blame FOLK!

Date: 2007-12-13 03:36 pm (UTC)Minimal is great obv but has been knocking round for ages now. Emo has also been around for ages, and is also still the worst thing ever. 'Dancing with an umbrella' - oh for goodness' sakes just wait to vote for 'Umbrella' in the best single poll! And has indie really been getting less rockish (and why does anyone CARE)?? I haven't heard this. Anyway nothing pertaining to indie should even be in the running.
Bassline basically feels like the most exciting thing to have happened this year - it's so exciting and hungry and full of life, and there's so much potential for it to go stratospheric.

Date: 2007-12-13 03:59 pm (UTC)Wikipedia doesn't even acknowledge it as a form of music. (I don't know if that refutes or supports the idea that it's a trend.)
What are your favorite bassline tracks (other than "Heartbroken")? (I'm listening to a bassline remix of Ciara's "Oh" right now and it's kind of meh, though "Oh" is something that really doesn't need to be messed with.)

Date: 2007-12-13 06:19 pm (UTC)Anyway I am completely hungover and unable to form thoughts so with minimal comment, some of my favourite bassline tunes du jour - all should be very easy to find on youtube (and following the 'similar videos' box is always good for building up quite an awesome bassline trail):
H2O ft Platnum - What's It Gonna Be?
I think I emailed this to you a while back? Infernally catchy boy-girl duet
TS7 ft Tonia - Smile
OK so right now this is the best and most perfectly unfolding verse ever: "I'm the kind of girl who does what she wants, gets what she needs / I'm a girl that's big on giving but I do like to receive / I know that there are people thinking sexual things about what I just said / but it goes to show you that the simplest things can be misread / but not this guy / this guy / he took his time to know me / and to show me / he opened up my eyes to new possibilities / but most of all / he makes me / he makes me / he makes me / he makes me... / he makes me smile"
T2 - Gonna Be Mine
Gemma Fox - Might Be
(above three can be d/lded from this blog (http://pardonmyfreedom.blogspot.com/2007/11/un-bruit-qui-court.html) - I prefer the DJ Q and X5 Dubs rmxes of Gemma Fox though; 'Gonna Be Mine' is AMAZING, "I'm gonna get to your heart, I'll take a shot in the dark, I never miss the mark - you're gonna be mine [bleep bleep swoop swoop wobble]")
Bliss'n'Script - Honey Child
loving the Virgo and Dexplicit mixes - reminds me of early Craig David from his 2-step days, sweet-sounding boy singer gets rejected, uses phrase "heavens to Betsy"
TS7 ft T Dot - Ding Dong
Stush-esque bratty female MC says: "I'll stick my back foot in ya mouth!" then pretends to be a doorbell
DJ Q - Shottas
JTJ Productions ft sMoKio & DB - Is You
this is pretty classic, bunch of MCs threatening to stab you with a fork over bomb explosions - video is proper thuggish, may post on poptimists properly
JTJ Productions - Dig The Way
sMoKio - Janno
s reynolds, who caught up with bassline like last week inna puffing'n'wheezing old man stylee, says this is chopped'n'screwed bassline - I agree
plus google just threw this link (http://forum.breakbeat.co.uk/tm.asp?m=1969892228&mpage=1&key=) at me where you can download zipfiles of producer-specific track (JTJ, TS7 and TRC), woo! and of course there are bunches atop piles of hott bassline r&b rmxes of varying quality - dexplicit dropped an awesome one of 'Like A Boy' the other week, T2's official rmx of J Holiday's 'Bed' is wicked, as is DJ Q's rmx of Dizzee's 'Flex'.
