(That's the Lex speaking)

1. Do we? Or "Do you?" I should say, since we're a loose clumping of individuals innit.

2. GO ON THEN! What's the best hip-hop you've heard this year?

I think the Trina and Gucci Mane are still on my lj from last week...

Kim absolutely kills the beat on her guest spot, that lascivious "yeeeaaaahhhh" is one of the best noises I have heard coming out of anyone's mouth this year.

RIGHT...

Right, going to expose myself to aaaaaall sorts of anger/laughter here probably with 100% honest stream of consciousness responses:

LEX'S RECCS:

Crime Mob, Rock Yo Hips - Prefer the female rap to male, don't like whatever that type of drum is, lyrics about smoking = yawn. 3/5

USDA, White Girl - I don't like backing people going "Oh, oh, oh", lyrics about smoking = BORING, not a fan of men going "huh!", EXCELLENT camera-charging-up-then-flashing sound at one point, do like people going "ha ha" in the background, beat overall slower than I normally like. 3/5 but could go up with repeated listen.

Gucci Mane, Freaky Gurl - "three girls with me like I'm going on a limo date"? Yes, I so relate to this. Sort of whiny vocals like he's trying to prove something. Sounds insecure. Like the xylophone type sound. Kim much better than he is. 2/5 for him, 3.5 for her.

Trina, Single Again - er, failed to find on iTunes. Listen to Fiery Furnaces Single Again instead. Now THERE's my kind of track! Takes a while to get into at first but then bam! 4/5

P Diddy, Last Night - I never like it when people say they're going to "make" you "feel it", unless these people are Britney. Realise I'm not listening to this with an open mind, cos I'm still hating on Diddy for those perfume ads where it sort of looks like he's raping someone. Disqualify myself from judging. -/-

Young Buck - Get Buck - Ha ha ha, LOVING this. Oh yes. Hilarious histrionic chanting intro, then swinging right into the heavy stuff. Reminds me why I used to listen to D12. Excellent sinister beat, upfront vocals. Irresistible beat. LOVE IT. Wld consider buying album. 4.5/5, or maybe even 5

T-Pain, Buy U A Drink - YUK YUK YUK, HATE this style of vocal. Makes me think of Craig David. Ugh. Ugh. Will never like, no matter how hard I try. Sorry. 1/5

Eve, Tambourine - Yes, like this. Would dance to rather than listen on headphones. Ass-shakin' action. Excellent use of air-raid type siren sound. 4/5

Chamillionaire ft Kelis, Not A Criminal - Couldn't find on iTunes. I do like Kelis though generally...

FREAKYTRIGGER'S RECCS:

MIA, Bird Flu - I knew I liked this. Why I didn't class it as hip hop I'm not sure. I think I had put her in the same bracket as the quite brilliant and equally mental Bonde Do Role. 4/5

Dizzee Rascal, Pussy'ole (Old Skool) - Again, had heard, but woo! Yeah! Great beat, instant toe-tapping. Woo! More woo! Not muh more to say here. Solid. 4/5

Dude N Nem, Watch My Feet - Quite nice rhythm, not sure about lyrics. Like the looping. Feel I should like this more for some reason, but overall a bit meh. 3/5

Lethal Bizzle, Police On My Back - Actually physically making me smile. Hurrah! Will get album. Have long suspected I would like LB if I gave him a chance. Lovely stuff. 4.5/5

Soulja Boy, Crank Dat - Mmmmmmmm. Don't like those big "crashes" of sound here, though I'm aware I've enjoyed similar effects in Dizzee. Can't dance to it, innit. But interesting. 3/5

Ashley Tisdale, Be Good To Me (Remix) - POP! Woo! Would like to hear scuzzed up dance version from Erol/similar. Vocals a bit "clean". Boring lyrics. But love the strings. 3.5/5

Will I Am, I Got It From My Mama - Oh, I have heard this. Kat, was this on the mix CD you made for Martin? Good fun. Danceable. Can't see listening to it on my own. 4/5 for dancing, 3/5 solo.

CONCLUSION: You can't say I didn't try, and I've come out with two albums to buy. Not bad. Really didn't like T Pain, that's the exact opposite of everything I like in music. Love going out to: Young Buck, great stuff, and Lethal Bizzle, about a million years after the bandwagon has left the building.

I think I concentrate more on the lyrics when the tunes aren't engaging me, thus great tunes can get away with silly lyrics. The same is true of people going on about weed and cars (boring) or being misogynistic etc - I don't care really if I'm enjoying the song. Think I like both the "harder" and dancier ends of hip-hop.

I think I did quite well for someone who spent last night listening to The Smiths.

"a limo date" = Elimidate (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elimidate)!

I only heard 'Get Buck' for the first time last week myself and was SCANDALISED that no one had pointed it out to me before. Same dude who did 'London Bridge', fyi, and you can tell.

Haha, I am so, so shamefully rubbish sometimes. Excellent. Lucky I don't depend on accuracy for a living like if I was, I dunno, journalist or something... Cough. My only excuse must be that I am not a music journalist and am thus allowed to be a bit crap in this area. Yep.

Listening to Get Buck again right now. YES. Can totes tell re: L-Bridge, nice.

Has anyone here got the Lethal Bizzle album? I love the single for the same reasons. One of my favourite singles of the year, is the rest of the album as good?

Do you mean this (http://www.mimifroufrou.com/scentedsalamander/images/Unforgivable_Woman.jpg)? Diddy looks goofy and awkward, but it hardly looks like sexual assault to me: the actress/model is more expressive than he is, and seems in the moment.

Ha ha, yes, tho was thinking of TV version which is definitely kinda worse. But she certainly looks like she's trying to get away, don't you think?
