[identity profile] freakytigger.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] poptimists
I am in my yearly "jesus i'd better catch up on some albums then" conscience fit. It is like the fable of the grasshopper and the ant, the ant works hard listening to albums all year and has a proper year end list that they've thought about and all, whereas the poptimist grasshopper swans about listening to McFly and has no resources when winter comes in.

But now grasshoppers have the interweb so in yr face ant.

I have albums by Enrique, Infernal, Radiohead, Siobhan Donaghy, Field, Fall Out Boy, Roisin Murphy and Studio to listen to. I NEED MOAR. What albums have you heard so far this year that you would urge me to listen to?

(I know I talked to some of you about this yesterday.)

Er, um? I'm listening to the new Underworld album right now, will report back asap.

My list from yesterday:

Date: 2007-10-30 02:54 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] katstevens.livejournal.com
MIA - Kala
Infernal - Paris to Berlin
Ellen Allien - Fabric 34
Enrique - Insomniac
Sophie Ellis Bextor - Trip The Light Fantastic

This was before I'd heard Blackout, though.

Underworld is proving insufficiently boshing :(

The only ones I'd recommend to you Tom (ie that I think there is a good-to-strong chance you will like) that you haven't already or aren't intending to hear (afaik) are Goodz, Amos and Rowland. Maaaaaybe Ny.

This whole year? My favourites have been Trentemoller and Panda Bear as well as The Field and High Contrast's new one, though I've not given that a proper enough listen to fully endorse it. Feist is nice as well. Also I've liked Helios's new album, even though it has vocals, and the new the Album Leaf one, and Stars of the Lid's one (possibly that's quite far from being pop at all, though). And I liked the Johnny Boy album because it was really strange and full and somehow sounded like it should have come out years ago, which I guess it should. Also, reminded from elsewhere on lj today I'd recommend the K'naan album, though I'm not sure it's from this year. And Akira the Don's album, 'When We Were Young' which some people love and others hate very strongly.

Oh yes, and Burial, because it's such an albumy album and so singular (heh). Though it's not really a listen often thing - for that I preferred Skream and Digital Mystikz.

Blake Shelton - Pure BS
Avril Lavigne - The Best Damn Thing
Aly & AJ
Hilary Duff
Jordan Pruitt - No Ordinary Girl
Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus was OK, but has some great songs. You at least need to hear "See You Again"

Not much to add but I echo the Feist and Panda Bear suggestions, possibly only the first one is Poptimist material though.

This year's been a bit disappointing for me so far but I tend to work a year behind - a lot of my favourite stuff at the moment is from mid to late 2006.

I have come back here to add that I downloaded that album from The Field after seeing it mentioned on here a couple of times, investigating, and liking the sound of it - and it is properly bloody lovely! The first record from this year that I've really felt like bullying my friends into buying.

i DON'T echo the inexplicably unanimous Feist love - it is SO UNBELIEVABLY INFERIOR to her first album. real disappointment for me.

You've got the new Kanye in your list and I'd have said the same about that! Though to be fair the first Feist is better.

That haven't been metioned already:

The New Pornographers - Challengers
Tegan and Sara - The Con
Destroyer - Destroyer's Rubies
The Shins - Wincing The Night Away
Jens Lekman - Night Falls Over Kortedala

But they are all a bit indie. Nindie, even.

Cortney Tidwell - Don't Let Stars Keep Us Tangled Up
Roisin Murphy - Overpowered

with Battles, Rihanna, LCD Soundsystem, Rufige Kru, Commix, Dragonette just outside - plus one or two others I've forgotten (Arcade Fire has grown on me a lot)

Kylie, Britney and Amerie unheard/pending

Dizzee album quiet disappointing for me in the end - I only really like a couple of tracks

I recommend:

Helloween - Gambling with the Devil
Coheed and Cambria - No World for Tomorrow
Enisferum - Victory Songs
Bowling for Soup - The Great Burrito Extortion Case
Therion - Gothic Kabbalah
Sunset Rubdown - Random Spirit Lover
Megadeth - United Abominations
Turisas - The Varangian Way

Turisas are releasing a cover of Boney M's "Rasputin". It's on youtube and stuff. Christmas number one, I reckon.

Old Fools at Play

Date: 2007-10-30 07:13 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] giddyoldgoat.livejournal.com
Remains - Religious Knives (drone-devotional Double Leopards related ritual)
Spooked Summer - Hototogisu (Bassett and Bower's sweet bliss noise thing, never bettered)
Trees Outside the Academy - Thurston Moore (surprisingly pretty boy-girl folk insiderdom)
Das Zerstoren, Zum Gerbaren - The New Blockaders (live noise-pain sesh from last year's ATP - it's got a German title, it must be HEAVY)
Presents the Paisley Reich - Times New Viking (faux-shit on siltbreeze)
Future Artists - The Dead C ("the AMM of punk rock")
Beyond - Dinosaur Jr (nothing changes)
Electric Dress - Merzbow/Carlos Giffoni/Jim O'Rourke (halfway to a headache)
Early Works - C.C.C.C. (essential archival set of japache)
Mortise and Tenon - Sapat (best hippy dippy dribble jam blat of 07)

You would like all the discs, Tom, I know you wld

Biggest let-down: the Animal Collective alb. Just horrible, and not in a good way.

Battles- Mirrored, Ulrich Schnauss- Goodbye (which is not what I expected at all from 'Medusa' but is a lovely dreampop album,) Malajube- Trompe l'Oeil, Maps- We Can Create, TEGAN AND SARA- THE CON OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG AMAZING, Booty Luv is worth a spin or two, although bits of it are very 'meh,' Maz Manson is worth downloading but the tracks could all do with being about a minute shorter, which is also sort of true of Nine Inch Nails, Les Savy Fav is ace as far as I've ascertained from listening to it in Jamie's room, if you haven't heard 'Hissing Fauna, Are You The Destroyer?' by Of Montreal then it's almost monstrously brilliant UNLIKE THIS RUBBISH REMIX I AM LISTENING TO, GOOD GOD, other people have mentioned 'In Our Bedroom After The War' by Stars, which is pretty wonderful except for 'Take Me To The Riot' in which Man From Stars decides to try and sound more like Morrissey than usual and ruins a decent tune, Electrelane is nice, Klaxons is better than it has any genuine right to be, the new Rush album is good if you like that kind of thing, which conveniently I happen to and Jamie T is absolutely brilliant, although if I remember correctly you don't like his voice.

oh, this is the one I do own already. As you infer, it's a lot like their other albums (most of which I also own). It has a couple of stellar moments, mostly in the second half. But I didn't quite have the gall to include it in my shortlist on Tom's other thread. A potential Top 25er though.
