This was actually quite difficult! PWEI's best singles (Can U Dig It excepted) didn't go Top 40; I ticked all the Carter traXoR I actually like that are on this list, and I couldn't bring myself to tick more than one thing by the awful Wonder Stuff.
From: [identity profile] freakytigger.livejournal.com
I actually thought Carter had more hitZoR than that too - shame no room for Anytime Anyplace Anywhere in the hearts of the UK public.

WHO WANTS TO BE THE DISCO KING

This is a very bad record. But not even the worst Wonder Stuff single. Did the one where pop's Mr Controversy Miles Hunt expressed the shocking opinion that paedos were bad chart?

When did PWEI become so beloved of thee children ov thee night? When I went to their reunion gig a couple of years ago fully half the audience were of a gothickal persuasion, but I don't remember them having any significant goth following at all the first time round.

There was a time when indie-punk outfit Carter USM were always in the charts but their distinct sound has seldom been copied. (http://blogs.guardian.co.uk/music/2007/09/atwhich_successful_bands_havent_been_influential.html)

Favourite quote:
"When Britpop happened everybody realised that they could rip off Oasis and so there were hundreds of new bands. Then Radiohead came along and nobody could work out how Jonny Greenwood played his guitar so it all went a bit quiet. Now, if they want to rip off The Libertines and the Arctic Monkeys, it's a fucking doddle!"

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!

I remember a LOOOONG time ago on ILM, Tom started a thread that was basically "Convince me I was wrong" where people dare others to listen to songs or artists they had stated in the past disliking.

So I uploaded The Wonder Stuff's "Who Wants To Be The Disco King?"

Tom listened, and wow, I had to back away from the bile! I never knew until that point how fearsome Tom could be!

This is the only Wonder Stuff song I still occasionally listen to, and the CD-single is the only Wonder Stuff item I still possess... I don't share the sentiments expressed in the song at all, however being that it's the Stuffies' most danceable song (imho), I enjoy the irony. I love the rolling tambourine during the chorus. (The B-sides are also XLNT.)

Then again, I think the U.S. was more friendly to the Stuff than the UK ever were, despite the huge UK press they got. (or am I wrong?)

Many essential PWEI singles were left off the poll! There were even two version of "There Is No Love" even, containing the excellent scratch remix.

No "Love Missile"? No "Def Con One - The Doomsday Powermix"? No "Another Man's Rhubarb"? No "Beaver Patrol"?
From: [identity profile] boyofbadgers.livejournal.com
None of them were Top 40 hits, unfortunately.

I feel fairly confident in saying

this scene is one of the brightest examples of a sound (or scene? you tell me) that failed to cross the ocean. i have sound dim concept of all of these groups, but couldn't tell you a thing about any of their songs if my life depended on it.

(but i would've voted for Neds if they'd been in the list)
