Adventures Beyond The Ultraworld is one of the best records ever made. I'm not saying I've never smoked weed, mind you, but I liked the Orb for about 2 years before I did!

do you know i'm not sure that i've got ABTU. i have ufORB on vinyl (opened, sadly), and i think i had a tape of remixes of ABTU, rather than the proper version...

ABTU is usually £3 in HMV sales nowadays. I picked it up for that much a couple of years back when I finally came to terms with the fact that my ancient tape copy was lost forever.

ABTU is the record C120 tapes were designed for!

Ah, that most easily broken of all formats, the TDK D120.

Yes I should maybe have scarequoted "designed".

My 120ed copy of Ultraworld lasted me an entire 4 week Interrail though.

*sobs at the depressing memories*

Actually, I *still* listen to my cassettes, unable to relax because of The Fear that they will break and be utterly irreplaceable.

ABTU felt very leftfield at the time - i mean for music of the NOW (then) - and i bought it totally on spec when i was in a reckid shop and it was playing. i just had to ask "what's this - and can i buy it now". i took it home, and my flatmates were all WTF, then oh wait this is all like Floyd and that (they wuz PF fans).

was there a scene they came out of, and this was the crossover success? or did they stake out what then became a hugely over cultivated field of dull

The first time I heard about them was in the NME's 'token dance column' bit in mid-89, they were mentioned alongside the KLF as pioneering "ambient house", Ever-Growing Brain was namechecked etc.

I guess the 'scene' was lots of hippy electronica - all the people they nicked stuff from and worked with - Gottsching, Eno, Steve Hillage - and the softer end of the Balearic movement. But it didn't really exist as a scene before the Orb came along and knitted it together - then suddenly i. everyone started making 'ambient dub' and ii. the crusty raver end of things got going (the Orb's fanbase - judging by my experience - were all way keen on Megadog, DJ Monkey Pilot, Ozrics etc.)

As a former Floyd fan I never thought they sounded anything like PF at all!
