how about a 'hate all the ones that I've had the misfortune to hear and you must be joking if you think I'm going to actively search out aural pain given that all of this young persons' music is totally rubbish nowadays' option?
although i guess i'd probably like some of the ones that would never be played on 6, but i'm not putting up with 30 minutes of moyles of a morning on the off-chance of hearing them...
Messy = good (esp. in White Stripes' case). QOTSA is also a bit in this category - the main riff has an awkward jerkiness to it which I found quite endearing.
Yay for Ghosts NE. Barely scraping into the 40 AGANE, but at least it made it.
hmmmm, kinda. (again, assuming it was the single i heard and not just an alBUM track they were playing on 6music) it hasn't even got a hook to grab on to. i think i like my stripes more DRIVIN' eg button to button, 7nation army...
Messy is what I like about the Holloways as well -really enjoy that manic, throw-it-at-the-wall-and-see-if-it-sticks sound that it's got. Not sure that they've got any tunes *other* than Generator, but it does make me happy whenever it's on the radio.
Might go back and tick Ghosts as well - didn't notice that but liked the video you posted.
I gave a hearty tick to Kelly Rowland, a fairly marginal tick to The Fray (way way better than "How to Save a Life") and those were 2 of only 4 of these that I know. The 2 I know and didn't tick are White Stripes and Chem Bros. I really dislike this White Stripes songs, and I've really liked most of their previous singles.
If you can see why that mildly annoying but not vile Sinclar thing is bad, surely you see why Klaxons...desecrating Grace is EVEN WORSE!!!! It may well be the very worst thing I've heard this year.
Don't like the Klaxons "Not Over" as much as the original or as much as the previous version the Klaxons did (seems to me they've unfunked the bass this time), but this is not a desecration but a way of finding their way into a searing ache that Grace didn't come close to. This track absolutely reaches me (or the previous Klaxon version does, anyway), justifies the Klaxons' existence, though it will no doubt make me disappointed in everything else they do in the future. Second favorite song today, ahead of the very good Kelly Rowland (which is the first solo jaunt I've ever liked of hers). I love this. But not as much as the Unklejam.
I like the euro-ragga too! I def prefer the C&C music factory one though. And the small kids singing along in the video was/is great even though I know it is wrong and bad.
Am actually kind of conflicted here! I dunno, I used to have time for both the White Stripes and QOTSA but neither of these are grabbing me at all - they start off decently (and I do like the organ squiggle on the WS song) but I lose interest quickly, they don't seem to go anywhere. 'Icky Thump' is better than that annoying 'Doorbell' shit which was the last White Stripes song I heard, though. I think I'll end up ticking them both, marginally - I suspect that the shit youtube quality isn't doing QOTSA any favours.
What I am 100% sure about is that they aren't a patch on MS KELLY! 'Like This' is amazing, so relaxed and fun.
Pleasantly surprised by Unklejam, I'd previously dismissed them on the grounds that I first heard about them on P**justice but this is quite nice. Could do with being more memorable but it's probably a grower, and a stylishly done one.
Also pleasantly surprised by Ghosts but not enough to tick because of his voice. Tori Amos has some gorgeous MOR propulsive balladry along these lines on her new album and I have that so don't need this.
Sinclar and Corenell - redundant, in an annoying way.
Well yes. The basic problem w/Icky Thump (not problem enough for me to untick it) is Jack White as vocalist and especially LYRICIST - WTF is he on about.
I looked up the lyrics and they appear to be about illegal imigrants? And how America is hypocritical about them? Or something boring like that. He's written lyrics I've liked before, not that any spring to mind right now.
Bob Sinclair: good continuation of theme but could do with more oomph. Borderline tick.
Unklejam: I don't like this and I'm not sure why yet. Possibly because popjustice have told me it's amazing and I can see no evidence of amazingness, and am thusly disappointed. No tick.
Kelly & Eve: great voices, reasonable beats. Borderline tick.
Qotsa: boring boring boring. Dudes, you used to be so GOOD! Where are your riffs? Where is the lonely desert drunkenness I used to love? No tick.
Chemical Bros: heard this for the first time last night. Pleasant electro noises a year too late, and never really gets going into the meaty waves they used to do so well. I can see it growing on me though - tick.
Klaxons: I am weeping for the memory of 1993. No tick.
Cornell/LME: They have taken a great Ibiza handbag tune and sucked out all the good bits! If you are going to bosh something up then get rid of the rub bits and bosh up the good bits, surely? No tick.
Not heard: White Stripes, Holloways, Fray, Ghosts.
But Unklejam are my favorite. Tremendous high pitch of emotion and high pitch of pitch, the contemporary dance world having teleported Sylvester and amazing tons of swish and passion into the right now. Makes me feel mighty real, or alive, anyway. (And I was ho-hum about the previous Unklejam single.)
Just listened to Icky Thump - blimey! Love the stylophone effect from the organ, plus Jack's vocal is much less annoying than on recent records. The video is also pretty good. It would have been better if it had only lasted two minutes though.
holloways!
Date: 2007-06-12 01:10 pm (UTC)they appear to have half written four songs and cut and shut them together to make this...
and that white stripes one is a right mess as well if it's the one i heard on the radio this morning...
