Last time, Marc Bolan and his dinosaurs topped the pops of 1971, with Get It On grabbing 29 ticks whilst poor old Mungo Jerry only got two. Onwards now, to a classic year for pop - moptops, boy bands and Cilla Black? It's 1964...

Pretty woman the film = a shocking outrage. Pretty Woman the song = bah it's OK, it qualifies for "any good at all" tho tbh Orbison's voice annoys me somewhat.

Only 3 ticks!! This is the greatest injustice EVAR.

Second half of 1964 = teh awesum. The first half though is mostly a long Merseybeat hangover. Billy J Kramer = Northside.

One of the great unanswered qns of Popular (which I am going to have to tackle in 2 entries time) is "When did flirty songs about small children stop being cute and start being creepy?"

"Clair" is not the starting point, that's for sure. Sometime after 1972 would be my answer.

I also ticked "Little Children" needless to say.

"Save All Your Kisses For Me" is the last No.1 to pivot on it I think.

"Clair" is kind of weirdly repulsive to me but that's nothing to do with its subject matter.

Heaven 17's wonderfully sinister Come Live With Me was a hit in 1983, but it's about a teenager rather than a small child. "I was thirty seven, you were seventeen" sings Glenn, but the creepy chorus is the kicker - "Kiss the boys goodbye!"

Also, and quite pertinently, Young Girls by Sparks. Although that's a bit more knowing...

"I like their talk, small little words". How young are they?

Agree on the magnificence of "I Feel Fine". The Lennon/McCartney poor man in comparison is probably "World Without Love", though.

Did you see the E-17 programme last night btw? I meant to point it was on yesterday.

i like cilla's version of anyone who had a heart bcz she just BELLOWS -- as per usual -- and there's a really funny disconnect between the song's call for sensitivity and her delivery, she's like a little britain character

The phenomenon you describe just freaks me out. Growing up on the Dionne Warwick version just makes Cilla seem out of her depth.

but the verses are so clipped! she's trying really hard for a kind of sandie-shaw delicacy, very english attenuated vowels, prim and precise, and then 'knowing i love you' SWOOPS up, and she's lost to belting once more. it's one of the most inconsistent performances!

I'm going to go back and tick the Four Pennies now because while it's a bit drippy it's still better than Cilla.

haha it derives from the same root as "baccalaureate" viz "bacca lauri" = laurel berry ("the strongest poison ever known" w.blake)

(spinster comes from the same family as rubster)

No, no, no! Why do people like 'You Really Got Me?' It is actually one of the ten worst songs EVER possibly. It's so boring it makes my eyes fall out and then there's that awful bit where they're ascending and they draw out the words and ARGH ARGH ARGH MY JUKEBOX HELL.

Actually I am not sure there are any songs by The Kinks that I like. Possibly due to the sheer terribleness of that one.
