Even easier than yesterday's!

No excuses for anyone ticking G'n'sodding'R over TLC, seriously. None whatsoever. One of the best singles ever versus one of the most atrocious.

I don't even like 'One More Time' but 'How Soon Is Now?' is disgusting. This is the first fight that I haven't actively thought either song was any good at all.

'Vogue' pwns all, 'Oops' isn't actually all that high in the Britney pantheon but I don't even think Britney's best would beat 'Vogue'. STRIKE A POSE, &c.

I have no idea how anyone with ears/soul/heart could pick Joy Division over Destiny's Child. The former is OK but seriously when do you EVER want to listen to it? The latter is heart-stoppingly brilliant and I want to listen to it RIGHT NOW.

Is this going to be a re-run of En Vogue v Nirvana? If so I think we should rename this community BORING ROCK CANONTIMISTS, and then send people to POP RE-EDUCATION CLASSES, which will include MAOIST SELF-DENUNCIATION.

My problem with "No Scrubs" is that it wears its ideas out and then keeps going anyway - it's a great, vicious 2 minutes 30 pop song drawn out to 4'30' cos that's how long singles were in 1999: the last 2 minutes is just all chorus cycling round and round and going nowhere really.

This is actually completely true (also, it's true of '1 Thing' but sshhhh I want people to keep ticking that). But its ideas are at least listenable in the first place.

Well the thing abt "1 Thing" is that its chorus is so bursting out all over the place that you're still getting your head round it even with lots of repeats. So it earns its length more.

The reason I don't mind 'No Scrubs' circling round and round in its last two minutes is because its chorus isn't particularly massive! With '1 Thing' the burstiness of the chorus loses its impact in the final stages whereas 'No Scrubs' settles into a lovely slinky going-nowhere groove.

I quite like the (from what I remember) organ at the end of '1 thing', it lets the song down gently.

There's lots more going on underneath the melody line in "1 Thing" as well. In fact, a whole new musical idea starts at around the 2'30" or 3 minute mark and then gradually takes over the song.

Annoyingly that's true only of the mix used for radio & on the album; the mix on the video has one of Left Eye's best raps taking up nearly a minute towards the end which really breaks up the repetitiveness and makes it a more interesting record (it's also the best bit of the video - she looks fantastic)

(oh - and of course if you're one of those people who finds Left Eye a bit annoying and samey this argument fails to apply)
