Nothing hugely dramatic in yesterday's fites - possibly today's will generate more conflict!

'Sweet Child O' Mine' is one of the least liberating and joyful things I have EVER HEARD!!!!!! It is an AWFUL NOISE - even 'Love Will Tear Us Apart' is happier because there is at least the bossa nova cover.

I can't believe you ticked it over TLC :((((((((

There was a disco or house cover or something, I'm sure. I can't testify as to whether this is it because I don't have sound at work.

Sweet Child over No Scrubs: Sweet Child is like the eighth best song on Appetite if even that, but I love Appetite; reason for not loving "Child" as much as some others is that it's a slow ballad and I generally don't like slow ballads. Best part is Axl's stretching the words on "where do we go, where do we go now," 'cause he actually doesn't know where to go. Kat, GN'R are naive and ignorant, but they're not stupid. This is the love ballad in the land of confusion, which makes it more interesting than 80% of other love ballads, since he's not promising her devotion he's promising to join her on a desperate journey to who knows where/nowhere. GN'R cops a rock stance and then unexpectedly (unexpected by me in '88, 'cause I truly thought rock was ready for the scrap heap by then), brings back analytic smarts of Dylan-Stones-Stooges-Ubu. Except they do it way better in "It's So Easy," in which he criticizes trees and phone poles and oncoming traffic for not running into him when he's driving drunk. Wants engagement, not getting it from the world, tries to get it from a girl. As for "No Scrubs," I love writers-producers Kandi-She'kspere '99 for their romantic journey across the measure bars, and for the ethereal harpsichords that accompany them; unfortunately it's TLC not Kandi doing the vocals, and I have a problem with T-Boz's "throaty, seductive voice" (Wikipedia). I tended to call her the horsey-voiced woman. Also, the lyrics are a valid complaint but not interesting. And anyway Kandi and She'kspere then came along on "Bills Bills Bills" and "There You Go" later in the year and totally trounced this.

Does it way better than on "Sweet Child," that is. (Not way better than "Under My Thumb" and "Like A Rolling Stone" and "Final Solution" and "Gimme Danger," though it's up there.)

There's also the Sheryl Crow cover which kind of proves that beneath the surface things which I'm repulsed by (the voice, the rock-ness) it's not even a particularly good song: Sheryl makes it sound pleasant but boring.

No she makes a lot of her own material sound pleasant and wonderful! My point being that if a song has a good tune and is well-written, Sheryl will be able to bring out those qualities (if no others). Not even she can do it with SCOM though ERGO it is a crap song even beneath the horrid guitars and yowling.

plainly this doesn't follow -- lots of ppl's covers of songs are timidly overwhelmed by WHAT THEY SEE (right or wrong) as the original's awesomeness

bsdies we already established that it is a grebt song by
i. listening to the original (not yet done be the lex)
ii. schoof being actually good when covering song despite being rub at all other times

I'd love to hear anyone's reasons for preferring JD here

1. I was there (I dunno where I was when "say My Name" was a single, but not there)
2. The intro and the outro of LWTUA - two of the biggest rushes in pop
