And now - the final* Pazz and Jop poll. 2005 - seems like it was yesterday eh?

You have thirteen ticks across 39 boxes - the holdover from last year that I left out was "Galang", if you're interested.

[Poll #904749]

*or potentially penultimate, but I suspect the discussion of the New Times PJ poll will be along the lines of the JP one i.e. poll-free.

2004: Joptimists Verdict

1. Toxic (52 votes - offhand I can't remember anyone ever getting more, and certainly the 91% is huge)
2. Take Me Out (43)
3. What You Waiting For? (38)
4. Chewing Gum (37)
5=. 99 Problems (36)
5=. Galang (36)
7. Heartbeat (33)
8. Drop It Like It's Hot (27)
9. Yeah (Usher) (26)
10. Somebody Told Me (25)

And that's it. If anyone has any ideas for flagship poll series I will take them under consideration!

I really love 'Toxic' but I still don't understand why it's such a consensus pick. (Or rather I do but don't understand why it specifically is a consensus pick!) It actually seems one of the least emotionally resonant Britney singles - the lyrics could be anything at all. This isn't a criticism, just...I'd've thought that consensus picks would have a more straightforward emotional point of engagement.

The big three here are all so...disparate. (I thought 'Gold Digger' was going to join them.)

Oh, yeah, I care about other Britney much more. But maybe it comes across as more adult or something.

But no-one cares about emotional resonance! Toxic is a consensus pick because it sounds AMAZING. Also it's a comeback single, the first time she was back-Back-BACK since debuting I'm A Slave 4 U in early September 2001.

People do care about emotional resonance, just look at 1 Thing or Since U Been Gone or Crazy or any of the very biggest hits! If it was all about how amazing it sounded - and it does sound amazing but not especially more than any other Britney/nu-pop track - then Madonna and Ciara would be leading this poll.

No, those two mostly just roll along, Toxic swirls and swoops and jumps! Hung Up is practically a house track for Christs sake, same beat all the way through.

Er "being a house track" and "sounding amazing" are far from mutually exclusive. I know 'Toxic' swirls and swoops etc, it just doesn't do it any more than, I dunno, 'Boys' or 'Anticipating' or 'Overprotected'.

Dude, Boys is a flat dirge compared to Toxic!

Actually I've just realised that I haven't heard this Ciara track, I was thinking of Goodies. Sorry!

Also, 1999 was a particularly loaded poll (from a poptimist standpoint) and I suspect that some people were strategically voting to make sure their favorites won.

PLEASE NOTE: I am not saying the 2003 poll was not amazing (which it was) but that it was obvious all along who was going to win and so there was no point strategically voting. Whereas, I suspect some "No Scrubs" or "Genie In A Bottle" or whatever fans may have intentionally not ticked "Baby One More Time" in order to prevent that from winning.

Also, "Toxic" is good, maybe even great, but "Baby One More Time" is one of the 25 or 50 greatest songs ever.

Well, Lex, obviously I disagree with this. Normally, I love ballads, and I'm right with you in thinking that the poptimists tend to diddle ballads. But Britney has yet to write a ballad that I thought was really great. Off the top of my head, top 3 is "Baby One More Time", "I'm A Slave 4U", "Toxic".

What about "And Then We Kiss"? (Yes, it was a single, made my Jackin' Pop ballot but I dropped it from my Pazz & Jop in favor of "London Bridge." Utterly gorgeous, but hung around a bit too long with this somewhat static gorgeousness. That complaint is relative. I have no trouble sitting back and relaxing with its gorgeousness. Merely decided that "London Bridge" and its dirty toms and lady ho had more.)

I have never heard 'And Then We Kiss'! How was it possible that a (good?) new Britney single emerged last year to absolutely 0 fanfare?

Fate! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3hQIoJqHZII) It definitely wasn't promoted as a single (or as anything else)...I remember hearing it around April '06, through random dling or maybe one of those unreadable omnibus pop dump sites, and figured it must have been from the remix alb.

This is the kind of sound that doesn't seem to really take off in the states, though -- pretty, low-key, coasting Eurodance energy.

Here's someone who put more effort into the video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LJFP30gWZM0). But an a cappella version of the song (I guess there are programs that do this?). I kinda like it!

Was on the remix alb that came out in 2005 to almost no fanfare in the U.S.; was sent out as a "promo single" last April or so, with several alternate versions included. The physical single was never released and the track probably got little promotion in the U.S. Don't know how much promotion it got elsewhere, but it did get airplay. Someone posted on Wikipedia that it hit number one on "most" Australian stations, though apparently wasn't counted for the charts. Hit number one in Israel, #2 in Indonesia and the Czech Republic, #3 in Hong Kong and Poland, #6 in South Africa (or at least on one of its radio stations), #11 in Lebanon and Tokyo (which I guess has its own chart), #12 in Russian airplay, #15 on the U.S. dance airplay chart (which takes in only nine stations).
