Quite possibly the last Pazz and Jop poll for a little while - 2001: A Jop Odyssey.

You get THIRTEEN ticks - Coldplay's "Yellow" is #5 in this poll but you got the chance to vote for it last time so it's left out.

[Poll #873942]

Let's All Vote Jop In The Year 2000

1. Say My Name (42 votes)
2. Oops I Did It Again (39)
3. Ms Jackson (38)
4=. Try Again (37)
4=. Independent Women Part 1 (37)
6. B.O.B. (31)
7=. The Real Slim Shady (29)
7=. Jumpin Jumpin (29)
9=. Stan (27)
9=. Forgot About Dre (27)

The only one of 42 tracks not to get a tick was "I Wish" by R Kelly.

Me and my then best friend had a massive ongoing DESTINY'S CHILD vs THE STROKES: who is more important? argument in 2001, which we even took into (student rag) print.

From the vantage point of 2006 I am feeling VERY SMUG INDEED.

Room On Fire is the record that made me retrospectively like The Strokes. I mean, clearly The Lex is wrong and they're by far and away the most important band here* even if most of what followed them was appalling. I'm not sure the influence of Destiny's Child is actually that great.

*I would never have predicted my saying this five years ago. In fact I think I would've been disgusted with myself.

thing is i'm not sure WHY they're REALLY any more important than Daft Punk here.

I don't think, retrospectively, 2001-era Daft Punk had that great an influence (compared to 1997-era DP). House music in general had a big shift away from the whole French thing about a year later, although I suppose you could argue they had a key role in the 80s revival.

That said, I reckon the 80s revival and with it electroclash/house would probably have happened anyway. It's hard to imagine many of the big guitar bands of the last few years having the same impact without the appearance of the Strokes.

i think DC's peak ran from 'Say My Name' until 'Survivor' (a single i didn't actually like much) so they had a good 18 months-2 years of peak and plateau

luckily i was loving both their singles and The Strokes pretty much equally.

nonsense, 'Get On The Bus' and 'Bills Bills Bills' and 'Bug-a-Boo' all predate 'Say My Name' and are BETTER! and 'Bootylicious' and 'Lose My Breath' and 'Soldier' postdate 'Survivor' and are totally up to its standard.

I didn't know you lot loved the Strokes. Disgusting. Disgusting.

White Stripes/Strokes combo saved my nightclub from imminent collapse under the weight of repeated Britpop. See also Chop Suey & Weezer. I didn't like Weezer much but the £1-shot swilling kids loved it. I wasn't going to argue.

it's possibly Beyoncé's finest moment! (er until 'Irreplaceable')

one of my least fave DC singles but hard to say why. too aggressive and 'bitter' perhaps. i didn't like 'Jumpin Jumpin' much by comparison either.

I thought it was WHUT as well.

I agree. A funny story about that song: it was SO OBVIOUSLY directed at LeToya and LaTavia that their lawyers went after Beyoncé (there was a clause in the DC split-up contract which said that neither side were permitted to say anything derogatory about the other in public - clearly LeT's lawyers thought this contravened it) though I don't think anything came of it.

Five years on when LeToya is asked in interviews how she felt when she first heard 'Survivor'? "Oh I totally identified with it, because I'm a survivor too, and I really admired them for saying such a strong statement" YAAAAARRRGH

i made my first proper (shonky) one in late 2000 but will always think of 'A Stroke Of Genie-Us' being posted on boomselection swiftly followed by 'Intro Inspection' as the watershed moment.

God, I left MASH UPS off what I was into. Anyhow: I was a complete boomselection addict, and frequently tried to induct mashups into college disco-things. No-one really liked them because they didn't like NEW THINGS. Still, "Don't Call Me Song 2" usually worked, but nothing, nothing, nothing, touches "Stroke of Genie-us" (apart from maybe "Are You Gonna Be My Love Machine" or the High And Dry/Sexual Healing one).
