Quite possibly the last Pazz and Jop poll for a little while - 2001: A Jop Odyssey.

You get THIRTEEN ticks - Coldplay's "Yellow" is #5 in this poll but you got the chance to vote for it last time so it's left out.

[Poll #873942]

Let's All Vote Jop In The Year 2000

1. Say My Name (42 votes)
2. Oops I Did It Again (39)
3. Ms Jackson (38)
4=. Try Again (37)
4=. Independent Women Part 1 (37)
6. B.O.B. (31)
7=. The Real Slim Shady (29)
7=. Jumpin Jumpin (29)
9=. Stan (27)
9=. Forgot About Dre (27)

The only one of 42 tracks not to get a tick was "I Wish" by R Kelly.

it was not a great year for me in terms of my life but like you the sheer volume of amazing music also makes me think back on it very fondly.

I actually had to think for a bit about what you meant by "not a brilliant year for the world".

Aaliyah RIP :(

likewise this was an amazing year for me apart from losing my job and 6 months of trying to deal with that, and obv. world events messing everything up forever.

the pop speaks for itself tho - so much great stuff.

Which do you think the critics who voted in this poll are most embarassed about now?

Me and my then best friend had a massive ongoing DESTINY'S CHILD vs THE STROKES: who is more important? argument in 2001, which we even took into (student rag) print.

From the vantage point of 2006 I am feeling VERY SMUG INDEED.

i made my first proper (shonky) one in late 2000 but will always think of 'A Stroke Of Genie-Us' being posted on boomselection swiftly followed by 'Intro Inspection' as the watershed moment.

God, I left MASH UPS off what I was into. Anyhow: I was a complete boomselection addict, and frequently tried to induct mashups into college disco-things. No-one really liked them because they didn't like NEW THINGS. Still, "Don't Call Me Song 2" usually worked, but nothing, nothing, nothing, touches "Stroke of Genie-us" (apart from maybe "Are You Gonna Be My Love Machine" or the High And Dry/Sexual Healing one).

(Wrong song here really. If Seven Days had been picked I'd have ticked it).

Because one of them goes on forever in a trancey way, and the other goes on forever in a rock'n'roll way?

Where are the votes for Sunshine Anderson? I am SHOCKED. :o

I mean I know she only had one good song/one song at all but it was so good I went out and bought it (and then had it nicked on a bus, because it was actually so good it was stealable, evidently, although was quite narked at the time what with having shelled out my £2.49 and all that) at a time when my idea of a deep musical discussion was 'Britney sux bcoz Staind r like sooo deep an only they undastand me yeah.' A someone else said, my trousers were quite large at this point. (btw, this might just be living in Outer Wales but people still wear those trousers- where do they get them or did they just stockpile?)

I would post a link but the internet has forgotten it happened. This is deeply troubling.
From: [identity profile] alexmacpherson.livejournal.com
yeah I am with you in repping for her, also wtf Mary J and Alicia made two of the best songs EVER EVER EVER which no one has ticked!

the Sunshine album is great as well! I have it somewhere but all my stuff is in boxes (to the left, to the left). If I find it I will upload it.

My pazzly and jopsky ballot, 2001

1. Missy Misdemeanor Elliott -- "Get Ur Freak On" (Gold Mind/Elektra) -- any version, all versions
2. Eve -- "Who's That Girl" (Ruff Ryders/Interscope)
3. Montgomery Gentry -- "Cold One Comin' On" (Columbia)
4. Backbone -- "5 Deuce-4 Tre" (Uptown/Universal)
5. Trace Adkins -- "I'm Tryin'" (Capitol)
6. Ludacris featuring Pharrell -- "Southern Hospitality" (Def Jam South/Universal)
7. The Color Guard -- "Not My Valentine" (Suziblade Music)
8. Pink -- "Get the Party Started" (Arista)
9. Destiny's Child -- "Survivor" (Columbia)

10. Lil' Romeo -- "My Baby" (SME/Priority)

(Speaking of actually good indie, "Not My Valentine" is Raincoats-type pick-up-sticks-and-build-it-anew pop, something between a sob and a slash. Discovered after reviewing it that the lead singer was dating my editor. Even better was the Gore Gore Girls' "Hunt You Down," a sobber-slasher meant to sound like the Stooges and actually does sound like the Stooges. Wasn't a single, however.)
