I appreciate that 2001 wasn't a particularly brilliant year for the world but I remember it quite fondly - ILX in full golden age flow, so much great music, the launch of Sussed/Club FT/Poptimism, the picnic in the sky,personal productivity pretty high, personal life somewhat ruinous but from my happy vantage point now that doesn't seem as bad.

it was not a great year for me in terms of my life but like you the sheer volume of amazing music also makes me think back on it very fondly.

I actually had to think for a bit about what you meant by "not a brilliant year for the world".

likewise this was an amazing year for me apart from losing my job and 6 months of trying to deal with that, and obv. world events messing everything up forever.

When the poll actually came out I remember being delighted because my 30 points for Discovery had lifted it above Stephen Malkmus. Which I don't think I've ever heard, so this is a bit unfair.

Unrepresented in the poll, but this was a big component of the tail-end of the year (and bigger in 2002).

At the time this seemed to me much more important than the Strokes.

Me and my then best friend had a massive ongoing DESTINY'S CHILD vs THE STROKES: who is more important? argument in 2001, which we even took into (student rag) print.

From the vantage point of 2006 I am feeling VERY SMUG INDEED.

i made my first proper (shonky) one in late 2000 but will always think of 'A Stroke Of Genie-Us' being posted on boomselection swiftly followed by 'Intro Inspection' as the watershed moment.

God, I left MASH UPS off what I was into. Anyhow: I was a complete boomselection addict, and frequently tried to induct mashups into college disco-things. No-one really liked them because they didn't like NEW THINGS. Still, "Don't Call Me Song 2" usually worked, but nothing, nothing, nothing, touches "Stroke of Genie-us" (apart from maybe "Are You Gonna Be My Love Machine" or the High And Dry/Sexual Healing one).

I mean I know she only had one good song/one song at all but it was so good I went out and bought it (and then had it nicked on a bus, because it was actually so good it was stealable, evidently, although was quite narked at the time what with having shelled out my £2.49 and all that) at a time when my idea of a deep musical discussion was 'Britney sux bcoz Staind r like sooo deep an only they undastand me yeah.' A someone else said, my trousers were quite large at this point. (btw, this might just be living in Outer Wales but people still wear those trousers- where do they get them or did they just stockpile?)
