haha I bought their single, the one that goes "fuck u I won't do what u tell me" (and I'm pretty sure I was listening to the Top40 when it got played in full oops), largely on the back of some TV appearance (The Late Show?) - I was sort of impressed by the noises the guitarist was making.

My sole interest in RATM was sonic, though. And brief. I've not heard anything else they've ever recorded and have 0 desire to.

What do you think of Evanescence? Angst-goth vocals on top, Rage Against The Machine accompaniment. I like it when it works, and it gets rid of Rage's most irritating element, the bad metal-rap (whereas I like the "rapper" in Evanescence's "Bring Me To Life").

I only know "Bring Me To Life" - which I think is pretty great, though it took me a little while to realise.

I have an MP3 of their latest hit (something something Sober) but haven't listened yet.

Looking back on RATM the music probably wasn't that bad.

yes, yes it was. RATM sucked on almost every conceivable level, rubbish politics, rubbish singing, rubbish everything.

I sort of assumed that my strong feelings about RATM were based on regular attendance at the kind of places that played them (despite Select raising the Britpop banner, nowhere in Oxford seemed keen to play much of it in '93 at least).

There was such a dearth of new indie-rock music between 98-01 that we were a bit stuck until the Strokes/White Stripes boosted everything up a bit.

The problem with Panic was that we had too broad a spectrum really. People turning up wanting Bellend Sebastian complained when we played Marilyn Manson, and the Slipknot fans turned their noses up when we put Add N To X on. Can't win. So we ended up playing the same Britpop records week in week out to keep everyone happy. Then people complained that we played the same stuff all the time. Bloody students.
