Apologies to anyone who wasted time messing about with the earlier version of this poll.

This was the hardest poll in terms of reaching the requisite 9 ticks, in part cos there's stuff I think I might well like (and probably know) but can't bring to mind - "Hip Hop Hooray" and Tag Team for instance.

I really, really didn't like 'alternative rock' at this point.

1993 was the year when I returned from the land beyond to find music completely different. A couple of friends will no doubt clearly recall meeting me in California (also, my first ever visit there) and being completely hypnotized by "Cannonball."

My pop instincts remained intact, however, as I recognized the genius of Beck's "Loser" on first listen. Why isn't it in this poll?

Nice to see Pazz & Jop getting it right at #1. Cannonball is one of those singles which I find just simply joyous and beautiful in a way that doesn't need to be explained - but I'm always surprised when other people like it!

i am a fool for not putting 'Oh Carolina' on Ultramix 93 (http://www.base58.com/ultra/#93) but in my defence Louchie Lou & Michie One's 'Shout' uses the same drum loop and is a wee bit better. probably best i left Porno For Pyros off tho.

'Shoop' is the second best Salt n Pepa single.

This was competing with "Whoot," which unfortunately didn't make the poll. I actually might go back and tick "Whoomp." Unlike Tom, I had an incredibly hard time limiting myself to nine. I've got another ten that I considered tickable. And it isn't that I loved the year's music particularly; I was drifting in my tastes, out of sorts with what was popular, but there turned out to be lots and lots of pleasing inventive stuff off in genres that weren't my main emotional movers.
