I WAS TRAINING TO BE A TEACHER when SLTS came out. i bloody loved it, and i felt v embarrassed re any "trendy teacher" thing cos so did the yr 11s, and i managed to never mention it in school.

sadly the same cannot be said, and i hang my head in shame now at the thort of it, when i let my guard down over: daisy chainsaw (spotted "logo" on a pupil's folder) and SULTANS OF PINK (I completed the line "... bumper to bumper")

I bought this from Rough Trade on 10" at the time. (The MM "Single of the Week" review more than a little responsible for this purchase.) I liked it then. I knew it had something special about it, as did the rest of the EP. But I ranked "Super-Electric" way down in my songs list for 1991 (a lowly #70). Just one of many indie-noise-pop singles and EPs that were knocking around at the time.

It was not until I saw the groop play live for the first time in 1992 that my (still-ongoing) obsession with them really took off.

I feel there should maybe be more commentary on Pavement. Not that I like them any more particularly (and I was only dutifully into them at the time) but.....erm....actually it strikes me I've never read anything very convincing or inspiring on Pavement ever: they've always been around (there was a time when every second thread on ILM seemed to be about them) and they have hugely passionate fans but I've never seen one of them articulate very well why the band are good.

Does anyone have anything to say about them?

Nothing. May not have even been released here as a single. Shamen did well on the "club play" chart (reached #1 a couple of times), but the only single to make the Hot 100 was "Move Any Mountain," which peaked at 38.

Well it meant, "Broke big commercially," though you had to willfully not notice all the punk in the Beastie Boys and Guns N' Roses to make this claim.
