Back after a short absence it's the Pazz and Jop poll for 1991 - a particular blockbuster of a poll this with TEN ticks to be shared between 28 singles (would have been 29 but for C&C Music Factory cropping up last year too).

There's a fair bit of ground to cover in the comments boxes, I'm thinking!

[Poll #845917]

1990: Time For The (Poptimist) Guru

1. Groove Is In The Heart (48 votes)
2. Vogue (42)
3. Nothing Compares 2 U (34)
4. Gonna Make You Sweat (28)
5. Been Caught Stealin (26)
6. Justify My Love (25)
7. Hold On (24)
8. Kool Thing (21)
9. Epic (19)
10=. Welcome To The Terrordome (18)
10=. 911 Is A Joke (18)

Note very rapid drop off in vote totals from 1-3 down.

God, it has, hasn't it? Poor old Right Said Fred and KLF sandwiched in with a load of BOBBINS.

[I possess a) that Thousand Yard Stare EP b) at least four Wonderstuff albums]

"Justified and Ancient" should get boldness too (made the 1992 Pazz & Jop).

There's an amazing number of these I've never heard.

they are ALL* brilliant, i hadn't realised quite how indie i'd been in '91 until i saw this list...

i was devouring every word of NME at this time, it took slightly longer for me to fall out of love with it than tom (ie five or six years)

*overstatement for dramatic effect, obv, even i can't defend midway still...

Super-electric

I bought this from Rough Trade on 10" at the time. (The MM "Single of the Week" review more than a little responsible for this purchase.) I liked it then. I knew it had something special about it, as did the rest of the EP. But I ranked "Super-Electric" way down in my songs list for 1991 (a lowly #70). Just one of many indie-noise-pop singles and EPs that were knocking around at the time.

It was not until I saw the groop play live for the first time in 1992 that my (still-ongoing) obsession with them really took off.

Carsmile OTM, this list beats the shite out of the Pazz & Jop, and the Billboard too for that matter.

Justified & ancient + Smells like Teen Spirit + Unfinished sympathy + Sexuality + Only love can break your heart + I'm to sexy + After The Watershed + Where the streets have no name + Endless art + The Fly + Gett off + Bring The Noise + Go = best year ever!
