A surprise victory for White Town saw Your Woman achieve 37 ticks last week, making it your favourite No.1 of 1997, whilst Tori, Hanson and the Spice Lasses could only muster 32 each. Elton and his windy candle brought up the rear with a solitary tick. This week we have Dutch painters, Mary Whitehouse-offending metaphors and glam-rock in full swing - it's 1972!

I mean the closest I got to a tick was 'Without You' but Mariah did it so much better.

I'm not sure! I have heard various bits and bobs from horrid shite-peddlers like Alice Cooper, Slade, Osmond et al, but don't know which ones, and they're all abysmal.

It doesn't look like there's any great amount of quality there, tbh. I bet [livejournal.com profile] freaktigger isn't looking forward to reviewing the early-70s #1s... Or is suddenly looking forward to fatherhood a lot more. See how the 70s are good for something, at least.

I have been looking forward to the early 70s for ages! The first half of 1970 is going to be a bit of a slog but then its YEARS OF PLENTY.

It upsets me that there are people on this fair planet we call Earth that either don't know or don't like School's Out.

have we ever had such a split of old vs young? why do the kids not like early 70s?

Overkill from our younger days, possibly? I however heart a hefty proportion of these so yay.

Incidentally, is this the most aesthetically consistent year in #1 history? By which I mean its easier to surmise the prevalent trend in UK pop from this lot than pretty much any other selection of #1s.

The monster Merseybeat boom of 63/64 is pretty consistent too.

I was going to post telling you not to grouse, the U.S. had it much worse, but then I actually looked at the U.S. # ones and they were quite good. Michael Jackson, Al Green, the Staple Singers, Neil Young, Neil Diamond, Temptations, etc. (Not to mention My Ding-A-Ling.)
