August is now with us so let's not mess about - time to judge July's pop virtues by rating the Top 40 hits of yestermonth...

I just don't know too many of these to feel it fair to comment. Although I will happily slate RHCP without needing to hear the song. (How wonderful that that album has been out for awhile now and I haven't consciously heard a single song!

As ever, I shall do a bit of youtubery tonight, then probably tick a few more.

Didn't Wolfmother go Top 40 in July?

But that is clearly the best jam.

I can't believe you hate the Rihanna, it's ludicrously soap opera! "I MIGHT AS WELL TAKE A GUN AND PUT IT TO HIS HEAD, GET IT OVER WITH"!

My main beef is the bit in the middle where it all stops and you can hear her hearbeating.

BOTHERD

I did the same thing, only not as a joke, I thought that was the question.

Looks like this might be a close one!

Even tho I am still broadly pro Lily A. I am sick of "Smile"

For the sake of fair play

Discounting my default vote for Ms Allen my next favourite is Xtina.

Muse

I was sorely disappointed when I heard the Muse song - far from the full on rock mentalism I'd been promised. Let's face it, it's no O-HUM.

As I have said elsewhere, the Muse love is like the 'Dakota' love. Wilful contrarianism. Because not only are both rubbish, they are both rubbish in EXACTLY the same way as before, ie nothing has changed, ie if you say you like nu-Muse but not old-Muse, or if you like 'Dakota' but not other Stereophonics, that is 1x BIG LIE.

I can't remember hearing any older Muse either! But I don't get why "Supermassive Black Hole" is meant to be any better than average.

It's also a lot gayer than even Muse normally manage, which is a Good Thing.

It doesn't sound as gay as the Rogue Traders!

Sure, but anything featuring the word "trader" is automatically yellow brick streets ahead in the gaystakes.

I quite like Muse and I couldn't work that out either. I actually think it's one of the weakest songs on the album, which have lots of very camp indeed bits. They really come into their own live, where Matt Bellamy appears to be channeling the spirit of Freddie Mercury.

Loosen up my buttonz babe

I love this Pussycat Dolls song so much - they were rubbish on the inventive, individual 'Don't Cha' but utterly triumphant on generic Scott Storch eastern-strings 'Buttonz'. The video is incredible, they kind of stride towards the camera like a sixteen-legged, dead-eyed sex zombie.

Official credit is to Pussycat Dolls ft Big Snoop Dogg, btw!

Why are they trailing Muse and the sodding Pipettes :(

Yes, they finally justified their existence with this song.

This is possibly the truest thing you have ever said, The Lex!

It sounds like they are sing "hoosen" instead of "loosen", that's why I like it.

I promise I'm not just copying [livejournal.com profile] lockedintheatti... it's just complete coincidence that we both think Justice vs Simian is the ACES and Red Hot Chili Peppers have declined so far that they're now less acceptable than even Razorshite or Fall Out Boy.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: WHY the continued critical adulation of RHCP?

From: [identity profile] lockedintheatti.livejournal.com
Yeah (but I'd expect it of them) but also XFM, Radio 1, Observer, Guardian. And often not just "we like them" (which I'd expect as they are outlets that are favourable to rock and indie) but quite extreme superlatives, which I really cannot understand. And that's me speaking as a poptimist who also listens to quite a bit of indie & rock too.

I forgot Summer Breeze. How can I forget Summer Breeze?

I ticked Sexy Love only because it really amuses me. You're not going to pay the rent by sitting at home moping, Ne-Yo! Go and learn a trade!

I'm going to come back from being an internetless hermit for three months with the statement that I Don't Think Lily Allen Is All She's Cracked Up To Be. In fact, her songs make me want to throw things at people with their acuely bland yet critically acclaimed rubbishness.

I may yet be proved wrong about this but those are my initial thoughts on the matter.

I of course mean acutely, not acuely, which is probably something arcane. Whoops.
