[identity profile] freakytigger.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] poptimists
After Friday's wranglings it came to me that what we need is some kind of scientific way of working out exactly how pop various acts are. I was going to call this simple feature the POPOMETER but [livejournal.com profile] awesomewells came up with a better name.

The idea is very simple - on a 1 to 10 scale, tell us how pop a particular act is. A score of 1 would be given to someone like Nurse With Wound, who are not very pop at all. A score of 10 might go to Britney Spears, or ABBA, both of whom are extremely pop. Over the weeks the results of these polls will build up to a body of incontrovertible evidence as to the popticity of our hott music starz.

[Poll #782116]

(If you neither know nor care who the Lex is just give the same answer to both questions!)

This is going to lead to more public disgrace for Poptimists :(

I still don't see how The Killers can be considered pop AT ALL.

Neil Tennant is going senile. He hasn't made any good music for over a decade anyway (apart from 'Miracles' which was a fluke).

The Killers are a major label band, a bunch of session musicians surrounding some dude who always ends up on "50 Buffest Men In World" lists, support Duran Duran on tour, have music videos with Diddy in 98 budgets (shot by Hollywood directors), and, you know, they're so not indie.

They're an indie band who flukily happen to be famous. This is like saying Death Cab For Motherfucking Cutie are pop - they will never ever be pop, not even if they have more No 1s than Westlife. Their aesthetic is indie, their sound is indie, their appeal is indie.

How the hell does he end up on any buffest menz lists?!

when I was "doing" djing at this horrible indie night back in bristol this perfectly perfect emo kid came up and wrote "some deathcab would be NICE" on the requests sheet, with "NICE" underlined and extra-thick so as to appear EXTRA sinister. for ages we talked about getting t-shirts with it on, but then we never did.

that's the end of the anecdote, really.

I think a really good idea for one of those throwaway Xmas hunour books would be "things people have said to me while I've been DJing".

Are you in London yet?

Yes! I was intending to go to Poptimism on Saturday until my sister popped up as she is wont to do and announced she was in London for, like, 2 days and we had to go out. So, yeah.

I can think of so many contributions for that book already. Off the top of my head, my favourite is when the guy with tattoos all over his face told me I could make loads of money in jail as a rent boy.

Confused-looking indie girl in Wales, as I was playing Lil Kim: "Is this emo?"

Awesome, you are in London, what are you doing?
