Poptimists. We need to talk.

You really let me down yesterday.

Ciara’s ‘Goodies’ is a poptimist touchstone, and Miss Ciara Princess Harris a poptimist heroine on a par with Kelis, Britney, Xtina, Aaliyah, Rachel and Kylie. Yet you did not give her the respect she deserved as the first lady of crunk’n’b. To add insult to injury, she appears to have been beaten by both past-it Chemical Brothers and dreadful indie Killers.

I’m disappointed in you.

Explain yourselves please.

> It's like saying you haven't heard 'Toxic' or 'Milkshake'.

Not really. Toxic and Milkshake have enjoyed sustained videoplay on TMF etc whilst I can't say I've ever seen the Ciara video in question.

Also I only saw that Gwen video in full on the Record Of The Year prog the following December! And that was my first hearing of My Humps as well. Telly there, marvellous :-)

Interesting also, as I saw the Kylie video loads, Gwen a few times but never 'Hollaback Girl' (altough, to be honest, I think I may have changed the channel once when I saw her, and missed it for that reason).

That's the problem with more fragmented music media these days - something that seems like it's everywhere to one person may end up passing other people by. I can't remember exactly where I was listening to music on TV or radio at the time, but I do know I was buying and listening to quite a lot over this period, and somehow Goodies still passed me by completely. I even remember it being one of the first number ones where I remember thinking at the time that I hadn't heard it.

"Goodies" had a longish run on the Radio 1 A-List but wasn't ubiquitous exactly.

Hoe much of this press was off an actual press?

I managed not to hear Amarillo until it was already number one. In fact the first time I heard that was at the Number 1s Poptimism.

I ticked it, but mainly because it brings back fond memories of working on Comic Relief things. Couldn't listen to it again, mind.

It was a number one in January, beating an Elvis re-release in a string of Elvis re-releases. The next week, it was replaced at number one by 'it's now or never' - 'it's now or never' being elvis' version of 'o sole mio' which is the cornetto song. It was nowhere near the same as other big r'n'b hits of the time in terms of airplay, before or after release, and was pretty much a surprise number one that vanished as soon as it charted.

I was watching music telly and listening to the radio, and it wasn't everywhere. 'Goodies' wasn't a great among greats, it was a freak moment of amazingness in the usual january drought-and-dross chart.

But 'Milkshake' stayed high in the chart during January and February, didn't it? To me, Milkshake feels like an Event Single in a way that Goodies didn't - I didn't see any press highlighting Goodies as the harbinger of a new genre, maybe I just wasn't paying attention. It was one of the most unassuming number ones!

I Believe In You had the 'written by jake shears' tag appended and also was a Kylie single - I think different rules apply to Kylie singles cos she's a National Treasure and all, it doesn't really matter how much they sell.
