Poptimists. We need to talk.

You really let me down yesterday.

Ciara’s ‘Goodies’ is a poptimist touchstone, and Miss Ciara Princess Harris a poptimist heroine on a par with Kelis, Britney, Xtina, Aaliyah, Rachel and Kylie. Yet you did not give her the respect she deserved as the first lady of crunk’n’b. To add insult to injury, she appears to have been beaten by both past-it Chemical Brothers and dreadful indie Killers.

I’m disappointed in you.

Explain yourselves please.

LOL! I can't comment because I can't remember the song, if in fact I ever heard it.

I do wonder, however, to what extent the environment affects perceptions. As far as my tastes go, we are now (in NOW terms) well beyond those golden few years when it seemed like every time someone swung a racket, they hit in the sweet spot (bad tennis metaphor, there). I firmly believe that true music lovers will come around to a lot of music, if they listen more often. And because there are fewer smashes, we listen less, and therefore we also like less. Was this Now really that bad, or was there just not enough good to it?

I can't say I listen to the radio. Maybe I'd recognise it... but poptimists has already led to me discovering lots of other chart music that I'd managed to miss/ignore. I shall track it down.

I don't understand all these people who've never heard the song. It got to no 1! It was everywhere! It's like saying you haven't heard 'Toxic' or 'Milkshake'.

This Now is really that bad after the first section, but even in the "golden years" there was an awful lot of dross - and surely the growth of dross means that shining examples of greatness stand out more? It didn't stop people ticking Gwen or Kylie...

Not really. Toxic and Milkshake have enjoyed sustained videoplay on TMF etc whilst I can't say I've ever seen the Ciara video in question.

That's the problem with more fragmented music media these days - something that seems like it's everywhere to one person may end up passing other people by. I can't remember exactly where I was listening to music on TV or radio at the time, but I do know I was buying and listening to quite a lot over this period, and somehow Goodies still passed me by completely. I even remember it being one of the first number ones where I remember thinking at the time that I hadn't heard it.

This is v strange to me because I think I use the traditional media a lot less than other poptimists (TV, radio), but from what I gather 'Goodies' was as ubiquitous on them as all the other big r&b/pop hits of the past few years. Ciara got loads of press as queen-of-amazing-new-sound movement, too.

It's just really dull compared to eg new Beyonce or J-Lo&LLCoolJ. I expect better of her after the 1-2 Step.

It IS '1 2 Step' though! But a fuller, bassier, more substantial version of it. There are some amazing classy descending melodies in it, and the way she hits certain notes is just incredible. "Miss Ciara on your radio, everybody turn it up/Spicy just like hot sauce, careful you might BURN IT UP"

Favourite bit in new Beyoncé = just after the completely amazing buckwild vocals at the end she does this reverse Xtina holler which starts off high and strong and ends up as this bizarre low gurgle.

I think your question has been answered, judging by the comments below. It seems to have totally passed most Poptimists by (myself included). I bet it didn't get anywhere near as much airplay/coverage as Toxic or Milkshake, hence it got outvoted by songs like The Killers that everyone knows and many people liked.
