OH MY GOD I NEVER KNEW COLA BOY WERE SAINT ETIENNE!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is a revelation of SEISMIC proportions for me - I always thought Cola Boy were faceless dance dudes with random session singer like Opus III (and haha yes like St Etienne too)!
St Etienne did one of the oddest-themed tennis songs ever - 'Conchita MartÃnez'. I think they did it because they "liked her name", and when she wasn't particularly famous. The following year...Conchita won Wimbledon.
Their album tracks up till 1994 were super ace too. Now they just make me cross (see also the waffly commentary to Finisterre). This is usually the point where I say that I once saw Bob and Pete shopping in Beanos (Croydon second-hand record shop of greatness). They were looking at that Thunderbirds single from the early 90s.
"Of course London's a very big place. It's a very big place Mr ______. A man can lose himself in London. Lose himself. Loooooooooose himself. LOSE HIMSELF IN LONDON!!!!!"
I highly recommend checking out at least one Sarah solo song - "Ready or Not," a wistful album track off Lipslide that Etienne Daho covered (with new French lyrics). Both versions are ace!
Such a good album. Did people just stop paying attention after the first greatest hits, as suggested above, or do you actually not like any of the later stuff? Although I've got sentimental love towards the early stuff, it hasn't dated as well as I'd like: I never listen to it now.
THAT IS AN AWFUL PICTURE
